Hey guys, what's the easiest way to get the factory oils off of new traps and get a coat of rust?

Easiest is to throw emin the dishwasher, and dip em in vinegar. Will rust overnight. second best is to boil em in lye, or drano and leave em lay in the yard for a couple of days until they start rusting.

1 container of saniflush to 20-25 gal of water has worked for me. 1 gal. of vinegar in 5 gal. of water has worked for me. Aint no hard and fast rules, though. The stronger your solution, the quicker the results. Just be careful with the caustics (lye, saniflush, drano). Nasty vapors and damaging to the eyes, if you splash it into them. Use it outside, with a garden hose handy, just in case. No sense losing or damaging your eyes-they won't grow back.

If for some reason you can't boil your traps, easy off foaming oven cleaner works ok. It has lye in it. Spray to cover all surfaces completely with the foam, allow to dissolve completely, then hose off with copious amts. of water. Better than nothing if you're an apartment dweller, and can't set up a boiling rig.

Actually, I ran 3 dozen traps through mine last week, used triple the amount of soap, and there wasn't hardly any mess at all. But I did run an extra cycle after i was finished, just to be on the safe side. But i ain't got no one to bi tch at me anyway ;D

I was planning on running an extra cycle or two after the traps too. If you guys don't hear from me after today - you'll know I didn't get the dishwasher clean enough!

HA - ran the traps through two full cycles with extra soap (two of those little blocks of soap instead of one) - then another cycle with nothing in the washer except the extra soap. Good as new. Whew!
And the traps are in the yard rusting as we speak.

Exactly as I did it, If you need em to rust a little quicker, put em in a little vinegar/water solution.

I might do that. Does anyone have a picture of a "properly rusted trap"? Several of them look like they are ready, but others don't?

Thanks Earl. You're ok afterall. Most of the time. I need to dip mine in vinegar to get them to rust a little better. I have a couple that look like that in some parts, but the rest aint rusting like that yet.

Put em in a creek for a week or so. What didn't rust will surely rust by next trapping season.

if theyre coon traps, #11s specifically, and youre using them for water sets, you can set them out of the box without doing anything to them and you'll still catch fur. ive done it, firsthand.

Spray with 409 de-greaser let them set over night then spay them off with a garden hose. If it don't get all the grease off do it again. The easist way I know.
