INDIANAPOLIS (May 9) - Rookie English driver Alex Lloyd and crewman Charles Buckman were hospitalized Friday after separate accidents during practice for the Indianapolis 500.
Buckman, a crewman for Dale Coyne Racing, was knocked to the ground in the pits by Danica Patrick's incoming car. He was taken to the hospital with a concussion and cuts to his face and scalp.
"It's really, really unfortunate what happened today, thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and hopefully he can get back to the track soon and be able to do what he loves," Patrick said in a statement.
"I really don't remember how it happened," Buckman said. "All I remember is I was talking with someone on Marco Andretti's team and then everything is blank from that point.
Lloyd complained of neck pain after hitting the wall hard in the first turn. The champion last season in the IRL's developmental Indy Lights Series had completed a lap at more than 223 mph when he lost control of his Dallara. He struck the outside wall with the rear of the car and continued into the second turn.
The 23-year-old was examined at the track's infield hospital then taken to Methodist Hospital for further tests.
The car was heavily damaged.
Earlier in the day, rookie Mario Dominguez of Mexico had a minor crash. He was not hurt when his car tapped the inside wall at slow speed in the warmup lane. He was examined at the track hospital and cleared to drive.
Rain ended practice almost three hours early late in the afternoon, the third time this week track time has been curtailed by the weather.
