I have bought some ingredients to make some coon bait. Should I make it up now and let it get stinking or wait and make it up and use it fresh? Thanks Steve

Depends on what the ingredients are. Care to elaborate? Not trying to be a smartazz, but some baits are better fresh-some better aged.

I have read and heard for coon you want a sweet lure. Then they want a fish smell. Then late season you want a loud gland lure to bring in the big bores.I have thought about mixing salmond oil and diced up crawdads. I think the later would work OK.I have used differnt lures at different times. You will have to decide what type of lure you want.

I bought baby clams and white fish cat food. I was going to blend them up in a food processor. I really have no idea what I am doing. Is there any thing else I should add to it? Steve

personally i think youre getting too complicated, especially right off the bat. Bluegills and salmon oil work well. ive even caught them on just salmon oil. when you use salmon oil as a trail lure you squirt it right along the waters and it disperses out along the edge of the water and actually wshes up against the bank both up and down stream as it disperses and it will get the attention of a coon or even mink and possum, lol, that are working that crick banks for a nice distance in either diirection. if you bait the hole with bluegills ya give it a little squirt of salmon oil as well. we catch our own bluegills and chunk them up. marshmallows in the pockets will work well also. im not saying what you have wont work, just thats its more involved thanwhat i use. some of the guys, who mix their own baits, could tell you more about if you need to add anything else to your mix . Good Luck.

Thanks everybody. I think I will mix it up the day I make my sets.
I went out yesterday and put some lure and a piece of sardein in the pockets of a few dirt cubbies where I plan to set traps.
I also have all 7 of the PVC mink cubbies out. I put some mink lure and a piece of sardein in each one. Today all the sardeins were gone.
Sorry I can't figure out how to spell sardein??? The little stinky fish I love to eat on crackers. ;D
Here is a link to my mink cubbie video.

Next spring is the best time to make your bait for next fall. We didn't start this year till late summer, and it kind of hustled us to get done. We still have 3 more beaver to grind. I think we have probably a gallon of deer meat based bait, the same for beaver meat based bait, Ditto meat and cheese based bait, and 2-3 gallons of fruit, fish, and shellfish based bait for coon. Probably 32 oz. of gland lure ( red/grey/cat/yote) and a couple of 8 oz jars of curiosity lure, plus 8 oz of LDC. We were talking last night, and we may start this fall freezing deer scraps to grind in the spring for next fall to get a jump on things. Plus, saving all rat and beaver carcasses for the spring grind-up, as well as all our glands. We had to buy glands and castor this year.

Thats a interesting mink set. looks like a great set that can be made up ahead of time.I didnt catch what size pvc was being used, and how the drownder lock was put on both pvc and the trap.

We're making lure for 6 trappers. ( four of which are going to Illinois this January for 12 days) Only one of them beaver traps, and he doesn't save his carcasses or his castors. Go figure. But he's gonna save them for us this year. ;D

I just use heads from the fish we catch all summer. We cut them up with a hatchet. Also use Muskrat and beaver meat. And a little fish oil. Keep it simple is the key in my book.

It is 4" pvc. The drownder lock was bolted to the bottom of the pvc to keep the bottom of the conibear from swinging under the pvc and catching the pvc instead of the mink. I think it is shown in the video pretty well. Steve

Nope.
He skins them and pitches the carcass. Doesn't want to fool with the castors. Never has.
He's gonna save his carcasses for us-we'll save the castors and oil sacs, and the tails for lure-making, and grind the meat for bait. Same for his 'rats.
