I have been pre-baiting some Little Grizz traps. I have been using marshmallow as bait. The coon have been cleaning up all the small marshmallows that I put around the trap. But they haven’t got the large one out of the trap. I used some coon lure in the trap so draw their attention to it. But they still didn’t get the one in the trap.
I also made some board sets. A 12” square board with a 1 ¾” hole in the center. The trap will set under the hole. I had them baited with marshmallow also. They didn’t reach down in the hole for the bait. But they cleaned up the bait on top of the board.
I went to the grocery tonight and got some clam juice. I am going to squirt some of that in the trap and see how it works. Any other suggestions?

Been reading and hearing about banana oil.. Strawberry or grape jelly may work too..... Gonna try banana oil myself. I think it is in the baking section...

I had to pull my little grizz traps before season came in. Long story so I haven't reset the traps.
At the second place I have been trapping I was using the plywood dp traps. only caught 1 coon and 1 possum. Had a bunch of traps set off and no catch.
I was using a piece of plywood 12" square and a victor 1 1/2. I used 2- 12" spikes in opposite corners to hold the board down.
I think the problem was the board was either to big or the spikes were to long. I believe the coon were standing on the board and pulling their foot out of the trap. The only coon I caught had both front feet through the hole and in the trap.
I also caught a coon in a dirt bank pocket set with a catch mark on the front foot and was caught in this set by a hind foot!
Right now I have all my traps pulled and plan to reset a new area this Saturday. So far I have been disapointed with the catch this year. 3 coon 3 possum. But I have high hopes for the next spot. I have already made the sets and installed the drownder wires. just need to add traps so I should be ready to go on Sat. just so we don't get a bunch of rain.

i wouldnt put all the little ones out.make them work for a meal by going after the large marshmallows to begin with.
im not saying dont prebait them to get them coming to your set but when youre ready to set the trap, stop putting out free food and make them go after the bait used to bait your trap. theyll find that big marshmallow and go for it,imo. it might just be that before they get to the big marshmallow theyre either full or their curioosity is satisfied so they dont need to go after the big mallow..

Mellow on the bottom, dog food/burnt orange peels, and top off with molasses over the dog food. I'll put a ring of fish oil around the grizz to bring them in. Or if your using small mellows mix them with dog food/burnt orange peels and pour on some molasses.
