I need a good sweet coon bait for a location where problems with domestics might be a problem. It should be OK, but I want to take this extra precaution.
I've seen some stuff about marshmallows, peanut butter, molasses, honey..... What have you guys used?

If you don't want to make it, Blackies Fur King.
If you want to roll your own, 1 lb. ripe banannas, 1 jar generic marshmallow creme, 1 or 2 oz vanilla oil(not extract-oil) from the grocery store. 1/4 oz bananna oil flavoring(from the candy flavoring section of the store). Thin or thicken as needed to meet your needs. Everything available at your local grocery store. ;D

4 good sized bannas run thru a blender (really ripe bannas) 4 oz. honney essence, 4 oz phenyl acitic acid, 8 oz. banna extract and 8 oz. glycerine blended together always makes a good lure for me used in gang sets. scansey is right the coon love it and it shure is sweet smelling.

Bananas? Never heard that before. Has anyone ever done anything with anise? Sometimes I used a anise based coon lure from ADC Target, Inc. But Bob Jameson's Peaches & Creme from Pa will not disappoint you! This heavy bodied bait is proving to be the most effective multi-species bait offered in the industry. Extremely attractive to all canines and coon. Aroma of ripen peaches with a soft side of odor of sweet cream. Great early season Peaches & Cream Universal Gel Bait www.jamesonsultrablend.com/adcbaits.html

Also, Blackie makes a lure base of fruit paste that you can flavor however you want. I bet an 8 oz. jar of his paste with 4-5 ripe blenderized banannas and a small can of cherries thrown in the blender, mixed with that fruit paste base would be a killer, too.

TC, I don't know if it would catch coon, but it sounds good enough to eat.

When you're mixing coon lures/baits with a flavored oil additive, go easy on the oil additive. Oils like spearmint and peppermint smell great, but taste VERY BITTER. If a coon gets a taste of a bait with a lot of bitter oil before he's caught, he may very well bail on you, before tripping the trap. One of the bigger lure/baitmakers told me that at a convention. That's why the bananna/cherry mix, fish/fish oil mix etc... work so well. All natural, nothing to turn them off before they're caught. That's why, in some cases, salt fish doesn't have the attraction to coon that fresh fish does. Different taste. JMHO, others may differ.

tc and frshwater, do your recipes need some sort of preservative? Or do they last for a while if I have more than I need?

Sodium benzoate if it's a meat based bait, Blackies Blend stop-it or fruit fresh from the grocery store(Blackies preferred) if it's fruit based. Blackies stuff has a mold inhibitor in it, as well as preservative. Benzoate is a preservative only, not a mold inhibitor. Here's a link for Blackies stuff. He's a grest feller to deal with, and has some of the best fox urine you can buy. www.blackiesblend.com/specialtyitems.html www.blackiesblend.com/adcbaits.html

Bananas? Never heard that before. Has anyone ever done anything with anise? Add just enough water to any flavor Kool Aid to make a thick paste and add a few drops of anise. This makes a nice loud smear bait.
