Hey does anyone around here talk about trapping anymore? Sheesh. OK, I have a bridge that has a ton of coon tracks under it. I mean boatloads. The one side is all water and pretty deep so no real chance to trap - but the other side has a bank that is all the silt and crap that has run down over the years. So I'm figuring - easy coon. So I put two sets under there - dirtholes. First night I have a trap that's tripped, but no fur. The second night - both are tripped. So I know the coon are there, but I'm having trouble. The silt that is run down is so "mucky" that it's nearly impossible to bed solid - the traps move no matter how much I work on them. I also think that in trying to bed the traps in the muck, I'm getting them suctioned into the muck, like when you walk in a swamp and your boot comes off. I think they are tripping too slow. I think my only option is to put sets on the trails a little way away from the bridge. But I'm open to other suggestions if anyone has any.

can you set on the deep side of the bank and run a drowner for him?
you can actually cut a trail down to your trap and put a little salmon oil down the trail to the pocket to bring him in.
or set the trails like your contemplating.

Pockets was my choice near the bridge.. Any pix of that.. I ran into that years ago and made pocket as close as I could. How deep is it on the other side? I love pockets for coon as you can tell.. There is a way.. Let me think..

Try either taking a chunk of solid sod and invert it to bed your trap. Or you could put a couple of bricks down slightly below ground level then put down a better bedding material on the bricks. Or you could put a pocket set on both sides of the bridge.

Don't want to use a drowner. Houses only about 300 yards away and I don't need any bad publicity. In fact, most of the area around me I would be leery of any lethal set. I have salmon oil and could use that on the trail. Interesting idea. I actually could use that at a different location. I thought about pockets, but I would still have the same problem. I like the sod or bricks idea maybe. Just so you know, here is a coon under the same bridge last year. It was dryer last year - the far edge you can see is under water this year, but only a few inches. The coon are running right through that little bit of water this year. But the higher water and more rain this year has the much more mucky this year. Last year it was very dryer. This is the second year in a row with a ton of sign here and I just need to figure out how to set it well and I should do good.

Without being a pain, can you get one from this year? Did you find the camera??? I just got 4 more coils of wire. Two 11 gauge and two 14 gauge...And... I am thinking and thanks for making me do it!!!!!!!!

Camera? What camera? I can't find the thing. I have one that is brand new and didn't want to take it with me on the line - in case I lost it. So I took the old beat up one. Wow, that was a good choice.

I hear ya. I got my own when I asked #2 if I could use the one "we" got for our aniverasry from her mom.. That was a good one.. Surprised you didn;t hear that answer in Pa!! I call her Hillary Jr for a reason!! Me, I would use a drowner slide and rig it to go under the bridge, as best I could.. I got a bunch made up. Send me a PM if you want to try a couple. Going fast.. Only have about 900 feet of 1/8 inch cable left!!!!!

we use salmon oil as a trail lure for every set we make.

82, I don't want to use a drowner. Too much chance of a domestic. I don't use any lethal sets near me here in SE PA. Too many people and pets.
Sunny, do you ever use a sweet bait at all? Do you think the salmon oil would work well leading to a sweet bait? I'm using sweet baits at another coon location.

i have not. i use straight fish cause thats what jerry has shown me works.
i have used marshmallows in live traps.
i think it would work. why wouldnt it..2 different smells would be there to appeal to every coons palat, lol.

How heavy do you put it down on the trail?

Post by Sunshine on Nov 5, 2008 21:12:22 GMT -5
we have it in flip top bottles.squeeze the bottle and swing your arm in each direction right and left is how we do it. it helps to toll em in.
we use pockets with the traps settin in just enough water to cover them.most of our pockets are the size of dirtholes.nothin elaborate or special.
ill take a picture of a set i make tomorrow and show you what im talking about.
the oil will disperse on the top of the water when you use it and the water actually carries the oil down stream further as it coat the banks edge.

Find the trail to the water and set D/P traps with sweet bait. No "domestics", and dry coon to skin. ;D

I only have permission on one side of the bridge - and of course under it.
Here's what I did today. The one set that was the toughest to bed - most squishy ground - I remade without the trap. Figured it would be a good set to ease a coons concerns.
Then, I remade the one set that was a little better - but used a rock under the trap and it was more solid.
Then, the trail on the side I have permission on has a new set.
We'll see what happens tomorrow. I know the coon travel under the bridge - the tracks make it look like a coon superhighway.

Scansy...set at the corners of the bridge........up in the dryer dirt. If you want to keep them out of sight put them on a dry land slide wire goin back under the bridge.
Or get yourself a cpl of buckets and use them pushed up under the bridge. You know how to set up a bucket with a FH? Since ya don't wanna use a body gripper.
There are other ways too...but those would be my first choices.

I'll make a seet with it and take some pics for ya.....basicly it is a 1.5 set...and a bucket over it..a smaller bucket....staked down to keep bucket in place. I also use a larger pipe for the same sets. they work and are DP. The pics will better show ya.

Well, now I'm angry. I'm losing a battle of wits with coons. Both sets were dug at today, but at sides away from my trap - neither trap fired. Right now, all I'm doing is feeding the coon. So, today, I remade the sets - used rocks at one and sticks at the other to make the guiding more obvious. I've been told you don't have to be to subtle with coon. Guess I'm gonna find out. Basically, I cubbied the sets up some. The coon may avoid the sets now, but there's no way they will approach from the wrong direction.

LOL - based on the size of the rocks I used, I would be using a very BIG trap.

I did the same thing on my pockets.. Dry pockets, can't set in the water yet.. I had a coyote working one of them. Right in a brushy little trickle.. Think I stood there for 5 minutes looking at the tracks.. Darnedest thing..
