good one plankton haha ----------------------------- POSTED: 11:10 am EST February 24, 2009
CONCORD, N.H. -- New Hampshire's maple syrup season is about to start, but some producers in the southern part of the state have been unable to fully assess the damage caused by December's ice storm.
The New Hampshire Maple Producers Association said many producers in Jaffrey, Rindge, Dublin, Lyndeborough and Temple -- areas hit hard by the storm -- have been able to find other orchards where they are setting up new tubing systems and preparing to tap.
But the association said some producers have miles of plastic tubing on the ground, buried by fallen limbs and trees along with layers of ice and snow. They have to replace their tubing, wire and other parts, totaling tens of thousands of dollars. A few have decided not to make syrup this year.
