When I was a kid, we had kildeer like those that nested in our garden every year. We had a dog that would go crazy - if it got close to the nest, the momma would fly about 10 yards away, lay on her side, flail her wings and feet, and squeal. Our dog would try to sneak up on her, but when the dog close, she would fly another ten yards or so and repeat the act. That dog never did catch momma, and she was drawing the dog away from her nest. The kildeer would nest in the same area every year. The dog never did figure it out.
