are both lure and bait necessary to put up big catch numbers of coyotes or is bait unnecessary to make the big catches,in your opinion?

Jerry and i have been talking bout the necessity of both bait and lure. he traps for alot of coyotes in Wyoming and he uses Last Step II by Dirk Miller and swears its the best lure hes ever got ahold of for coyotes.
ill tell ya this, it stinks to high heavens. ;D
he agrees with you that both lure and bait,in general, isnt necessary to catch coyotes.

lures will catch MOSt yotes.....I only use baits when the weather gets really bad. Long periods of cold, snow or heavy rain.
I prefer lennons LDC lures for yotes and fox. But there are many others that work really well. I do believe that is or cqan be a regional thing too.
I normaly make my own baits from whatever carcasses and such I have available. Dobbins bait solution made with cat meat is some great stuff.

A lot of baits are lures in and of themselves. Most bait solutions are a mix of fish oil, beaver castor, fox glands, fox urine, mink glands, maybe a few weasel glands, asafeotida, valerian, amberette, etc, etc, etc... added to wild red meat, or a fish or shellfish base. Most commercial bait solutions are a lure with preservative to keep the meat from spoiling. A good bait solution with an attractive meat is usually a good draw without a separate lure. Several "lures" sold commercially are basically a food based "lure"( either ground up meat or liquified meat) as opposed to being strictly a curiosity type lure.(glands and curiosity agents only)
Make sense? I guess what I'm trying to say is some "lures" have a food base the same as a "bait", and some "baits" have additional curiosity ingredients like a "lure."

I don't trap for live market at all here. Might if I could....but we can''t.
I do some yote trapping for adc work...but don' get alot of calls for them.
I trap yotes to get shed of the danged things. I have caught four this year and gave them all to a youngun that wants to get into trapping. I figure if he gets past skinnin a stinkin yote he will make it.

GH II and Violator 7 are both good lures.

IMO Lures are for catching coyotes and baits are for cathing possums.
I used a cat and beaver based bait one year and that was the most possums I caught in one year and only caught one coyote on it.
It's also easier for me to set a flat set than a dirt hole so that offically ended my bait use. I have a quart of Dobbins bait solution mixed in beaver meat that I probably will never use.

I aint sure if it is a lure or a bait....lol....but for yotes....horse hoof is as good as it gets really. flat sets, dirt holes, post sets, ya name it...if a yote smells it, which they will, they have to go find it. They will dig for it, piss on it, bark at it, and get caught with it. Stinks worst then a Sunny fart, but the yotes love it.

For dirt holes i use bait, when its really cold anyway. But most of the coyotes I catch every year are caught on flat sets with no bait at all.

We prefer lure for canines and mostly use bait once it starts getting real cold. Having said that we do use "tar Bait" by itself but its stronger then most canines lure anyhow. Russ Carman lures are superb for us and Silent Partner and Trails End are two I recommend to everyone. I dont run a canine line without Carman lures in my pack. 100+ canine's a year several years running during the fur boom and high competition taught me a few things.

I caught many coyotes off of Russ Carmans Pro-Mix. Probably the only lure anyone needs in mid weather.
