I always ship to NAFA. Have always gotten better prices than selling locally. Of course, you have to wait longer to get paid.

but if you can afford to wait, in the long run over time youll make far more at NAFA than selling in the country, imo. heck alot of the country buyers turn around and ship. i know for a fact that all the wv cats, greys and section III coon this past season that were offered at the WV fur sale went to NAFA via a country buyer. this year he lost money on the cats though, big money. i also know wv grades coon hard and only 1/3 of the wv coons last year they graded as section IIIs were actually graded section IIIs at NAFA.

I will agree that MOST country buyers just turn around and ship...BUT I think most of us would be surprised how many have other markets or avenues of getting to the overseas buyers...

There was an article in FFG this month about a guy who trapped beaver. He sold some locally in the carcass and got as little as $5. Then he said he shipped the finished hides to NAFA and averaged somewhere in the neighborhood of $28.
Of course, there's the extra work involved in finishing the pelts. But, if you enjoy doing it like I do, it's worth the effort; maybe not always financially, but at least in satisfaction.

I couldn't find the magazine right away, but it's the Sept 09 issue of FFG, pages 14-16. I was off a little on what he said for prices, but I figure I was doing pretty good just remembering what magazine I read the article in. He said he was only getting $5. in the green. But, he shipped 24 beaver to NAFA and averaged $24.67. He was from central Arkansas County, Arkansas.

If those beaver were sold last year at NAFA, I would say he is not telling the truth. If they were sold the year before last, then that is about what that beaver was worth.

You are both right. By deduction it would seem to me the year was 2007 because he refers to something as the previous year being 2006.
Last year I sent 23 fall-caught MN beaver to NAFA and only averaged around $16.

how does 16 compare to what youd normally average on the same coon 7?

I had several coon last year that I sent to NAFA that brought me over $25. But, I had some that weren't real prime or large that I only got $5 or $6 for. That brings down the average big time.

in the late 90's i had a fella ask me to show him how to trap beaver on the Miss. river here. i sepnt over a week showing him how I do it. by years end he had caught 92 beaver off the river. Not bad for a 63 year old man in his first year.
Anyway. he stopped by my house one night and asked me if I had 8 beaver he could use to make his shioment to NAFA an even 100. I gave him eight of mine. Not the tops nor the bottoms of that years catch. i told him to pay me for them when he sold them all.
Long about August he came back by. ( I had forgotten all about the things really) he handed me a check for 64 bucks. I asked what it was for. He PROUDLY said, that is for the beaver I got from ya. I went beet red instantly. I told him to come in the house and I would show him what those beaver were really worth to me. I had sold over 250 that year for an average of 26+ bucks. I didn't expect him to pay me that much, it wasn't his fault really. But that is exactly why i won't ship so much as a mouse hide to NAFA.
I have heard it all about them. Good and Bad. If you look into it, and really listen. You will see how much they have hurt the trappers and even more so the local buyers. I have NO use for them at all. If they were to close up tomorrow all trappers would be better off.

I couldn't disagree with you more. I've sold to country buyers, but it didn't take me long to learn my lesson. One year I had an offer of $8 apiece on my finished coon (32 of them) from a country buyer. He assured me coon were way down that year and he was really sticking his neck out giving me that much.
I opted to ship to NAFA instead and averaged around $18. My only complaint with them is that sometimes your fur doesn't alway sell right away, so you have to wait for your money. But, usually that's because they don't want to give it away cheap.

NAFjerrys sold to both country buyers and NAFA but once he went to shipping he said hed never go back to the country buyer.
over the years hes made way more money by selling his fur in the country.
he sold his beaver in the country one year and the beaver Charlie Dobbins caught in the sme place( they were togethe )were shipped.
Charlie got double on the same beaver Jerry had. heck they put em up together.
one other time a local buyer gave him 12., which he was happy with, then the local guy sent em up and sold them for 24 average. that was the last time he sold in the country.
i do know that alot of the country buyers here turn around and ship their fur.
the auction houses arent the same either..i also know of one guy who bought a bunch of fur at Fur Harvesters and then turned around and shipped to NAFA and made a lot of money.
if thewyre shippin it to NAFA themselves your gonna make less on it than it worth cause theyre gonna have to buy it a few bucks cheaper than they expect it to sell for to make a profit themselves.
