can you imagine how much carrion would be left laying around if it werent for possum? Buzzards couldnt eat it all. i think they help to keep diseases down by keeping carrion gone.
People will and have trapped muskrats for the same money as possum bring and even targetted rats for the price. Last year i averaged 3.50 for them. My high was over 7.00.
so you tell me, why are people too lazy to put up possum? theyre easy to skin and flesh..ya just got to be a little careful cause their skin is a more fragile. They dont smell any worse than any rats to me.
So why DONT people take the time and put them up? Harvesting anything then throwing it away is wasteful and shows a lack of respect that every creature God created deserves. Im sure he didnt think they were useless when he created them.
So why dont you people put them up?

sorry i opened this can of worms; i didnt mean to critizise anyone for releasing possum, well not in a mean way. whatever someone wants to release so be it, just keep ion mind it seems there are some peopel saying if you arent going to use it why kill it, just release it. well lets be honest ( and i'm not accusing anyone or asking for a show of hands). how many skin skunks, i guess if you arent skinning them your releasing them right. how about those feral(house cats that are far from home) cats; are those being released or skinned. it seems nobody other than me admits to trapping possum on purpose well i do and i'll do it again; keep in mind i put them up. as far as them eating carrion i think somebody mentioned that coon do that as well.

glad to see the skunks put up, (good going sunshine) but there arent many of us that do that. by the way if you send to nafta amybe you could get more people to put them up by telling what you got for them.

Yeah, getting sprayed would suck. If you can dispatch without getting sprayed though, the fur has value.

I have put up 11 so far this year. collected the essence from them all....the first one mad me hope for the best in em all...he had over an ounce of essence. since then I haven't had but one to even have half an ounce. I use the acetone dispatch, with a syringe on a chimney cleaning pole. the only time I even hardly smell the skunk smell is when i extract the needle after getting the essence.

I use a six foot pole. 20 ft is too close if the wind is wrong. I have only had one to spray when trying to dispatch this year, and that was because the syringe was sticking. if you pay attention to the wind, and move slow, u should have no problems.
