I had always used a little bit of urine on the backing at my dirtholes for reds. This year, I went without it (I was out and never remembered to get more - duh). So I made sets without the urine, doing everything else the same - bait in the hole and/or gland lure on the backing. My catch percentage is up this year and I have had many less diggers/overturned traps. I know I'm bedding the traps better this year as well, but wondered if the urine (lack of ) this year is making the reds work the set differently? Do you guys use urine at dirtholes.

i always use urine at sets. the problem with urine is if it's a top grade urine it works great BUT if not you will run in to problems..many times when urine is collected droppings and food bits get in the urine and contamates it to the point that it's almost worthless. if the urine is contamanated then the trap will 9 times out of ten is to.

sunny here i don't see a lot of rolling on my sets unless i have bad urine or i use a loud bait.canines loves to get foul odors on them.many times trappers spray urine over the trap pattern and when that happens with bad urine they will in deed roll.when it comes to urine i use it on urine post only now on my flat sets, walk threws and dirt holes i use a gland lure plus a coursity lure.this has helpped me cut out the rollings.i beleave when a canine rolls there is a reason why.i beleave it's due to some thing in the lure, bait or urine that causes this reaction in canines. i might be wroung but i have been before.i also feel that any ingredent that makes a canine roll will also make a cat rub.meaning if you have a lure that the canines roll on and use it on a rub post type set then it still works on canines and cats ,because what they are doing is trying to get that odor on them.i feel this is why a lot of beginners fell due to not applying thier lures at proper sets and of course using to much.thats the dealers fought due to the fact that they don't exsplain how to use but again why should they that would cut thier sales back.

That would seem to make sense with what I saw this year Bill. I didn't use urine and had much less problems with traps being uncovered or even sprung/empty.

i agree scansy. last season i got some from arts called hole shot ,what this had was red fox glands and a food call mixed with red fox urine .it was suppose to work like a smell left where a fox or coyote dug up a food cache.worked great to a degree but with the food call added it cause a lot of rolling on my sets.in side of the hole it worked good but on a backing worthless and more rolling .now on urine post the problem i had was instead of marking the post they carried it a few feet and dropped it. my point is urine must be used the right way.i have seen trappers put urine on a 12 inch post from the top wroung. a canine marks the base of a urine post not on the top.now lure i do place on top to give it room for the air current to carry it farther and then i use urine on a urine post right at the bottom.

Yeah, I think I learned something this year - my third year trapping - I was using too much smelly stuff - bait, gland lure and urine - at all my dirtholes. Spending more money than I needed too and getting more problems for it.

scansy thats all in trapping not one day will come by that you don't learn some thing new .one thing for sure many trappers don't know that even gland lures can in deed be used to much at a set.
