I would imagine most beaver trappers save the castors from the beaver they trap with the prices paid for castor. But, how many trappers take the time to save the sack oil?
Sack oil can be a great lure when nothing else works. I just finished up a nuisance beaver job. I caught the first beaver the first night using castor. There was another beaver, but it wouldn't go near anything that smelled like castor. After a few days of ignoring my bait sets, castor sets, and food lure sets, I finally caught the beaver using a sack oil set. Just a few drops on a stick got the beaver the next night.
I've used this set in the past with good results when nothing else works for a trap-shy beaver. IMO, this set should be used only as a last resort because if you use it right away, you reduce your options on a trap-shy beaver.

Jerry always saves his. he sells it to a big lure maker(not paul) and has for years. the guy buys it straight from the beaver. i think he grinds the whole sac in his lure..
either way, Jerry doesnt have to squeeze it out. just freeze and ship.

I always squeeze the oil out and freeze it until i need it. I never put any preservatives in it. I usually can catch all the beaver without using it, but sometimes it comes in handy.

Oil is a great lure at times. Only problem with it is one drop to much and it will kill a whole set or area. I have seen ....and done it myself......many times.
I have also used it to make other lures/baits. Such as coon and mink lures. I am not decided rather it helps in some or not. Again, I believe it is so touchy to use that getting the right amount can either make or break a bait.

i do buy sac oil by the gals as i have a beaver formula that calls for sac oil and huckleberry is right on the money it don't take much to kill a set.
it's deadly when mixed in baits for canines as well.

When I've used it in a beaver set, it only takes couple of drops. A beaver has a great nose; a lot better than some trappers think. Just because you can't smell it, doesn't mean the beaver can't.
I had a beaver swimming back and forth in a stream once, very upset because I had an UNOPENED jar of castor in my back pocket. I couldn't smell it, but he obviously could. He hissed and chirped trying to zero in on me as he swam back and forth.
