Went and picked up a new shotgun the other day. It is a Win. "defender" Used by alot of local police. 26" barrell. Actually it is a Win. 1300.
Anyhow they are sposed to be very good slug guns. We can only use shotguns with slugs for deer here in IL. Or muzzle loaders.
I shot it with some field loads, #6 shot. The thing has got some kick to it. (It is super light) I want to try some 2 3/4 inch slugs and the 3" slugs.
Anyone ever use this gun as a slug gun? How ya rate it against other smooth bore Shotguns?

I wish we could use 00 for deer here. That stuff is nasty. I have shot many a yote with it. LOL
I prefer #3 shot for them though.
We can't use rifles because of to many people and the wide open land in some parts of the state. Funny part is we can use any rifle for anything other than deer.
Where I deer hunt ya don't need a rifle anyway. I have never in my life shot a deer over 100 yds. in IL.

true but a slug is just as deadly as a rifle for someone not seen in the brush if not more so because of the fact that brus wont stop it where a rifle is more likely to be stopped by a smaller branch etc... but when i deer hunt now days i do it with a bow anyway so most my shots are under 30 yards lol

have heard of those shotgun only states but never understood the logic behind it We have it in MN mostly in the southern part of the state or the more populated areas. The idea is that a shotgun slug won't carry as great of a distance as a rifle bullet will. The northern half is either rifle or shotgun. I use a rifle, as does my wife.

Sure a slug is as deadly if not more deadly then most rifles. but they have very little range compared to a rifle. Although some SG's can shopot accurately for 200 yds.
I used a 308 rifle in TN. for most of my deer hunting, but had two areas I would take the old 12 ga. because of the brush. it was like shooting through grape vines. That slug didn't care it just kep[t goin and killin. LOL
Dorothy is safe Sunny, she knows to behave herself. ;D

but when hunting one is usually out inthe woods and trees etc and a slug will go farther through brush etc than most rifles

a slug will go through a little heavier brush then most rifles, but not as much as ya would think. I have seen twigs the size of a pencil be enough to deflect or destroy a slug. I have also had road gunners shoot HP rifles through the woods in my direction and seen limbs being hit and still hear the bullet whiz past me.

Five years ago they let us use rifles during the regular season and the accident rate didn't change. Save for certain circumstances I've always felt "shotgun only" was rather misguided.
M1200/1300 shotguns are good servicable weapons for your purposes. The aluminum receiver makes it a bit lighter and recoil may be more pronounced.

glad to see ya here RZ. Hope ya keep posting with us.
The recoil is qute a bit more than a regular 1300. But not enough to worry about. So far I am liking this gun. Wish I could get the slug barrell for it and get a scope on it. But That is not gonna happen this week.
