Well I don't know if I have holes in my head or not but my wife and I just put an offer in on a 2 acer parcel of land with a 4 bedroom 2 bath double car garage, 2 sheds and an inground pool . We are still keeping our place we have and renting it to own to our youngest daughter. We will have a mortgage of $135,000 for 25 years so by the time I'm 87 it will be paid off . I'm beginning to think I'm a bit crazy. Trapping better be good for the next 25 years, lol!

Well it is done we take possession of the property on June 30th. It is just shy of 3 acres with 2 sheds one which with a bit of reno will become a fur shed with lights and heat so I can do fur up without not being able to see properly and freezing my fingers as well as the rest of me. My youngest daughter will be moving in here and is buying the place from us in a 15yr lease to own contract. That will certainly help out with the payments and it gets her in a decent place for a very reasonable price. This place is 1 & 3/4 acres with a 20 x 30 ft building and a mini home on it with a 27 tree orchard that I planted 3 yrs ago and is going to produce plums apples nectarines peaches and pears, along with some high bush blueberries rhubarb red currants strawberries grapes raspberries and gooseberries with a well tilled area for a garden and several areas with wild blueberries growing on it. I think she is getting a very good deal for under 70k. Sheesh what parents do for their kids. The other four have all had their help some more than others but they all know that we will help them in any way that we can if they need it.

Lone, I'd be happy with a check for 2k each year and I know that that can be done easy enough. I have to make a decent payday from NAFTA this coming season just to pay for the little bit of upgraded gear I just bought. 1doz. #3, 4coil fully modified Bridger's, 2doz. 120mag. Bridger's an 8"x54" fleshing beam, 2doz. muskrat stretchers , a Necker flesher, and a Dexter beaver knife. This stuff adds up fast just this little bit is setting me back about $750.00 landed at my door from F&T Fur & Trading Post. But to keep up with the new regs I have to buy newer traps and there are not many second hand traps that meet the new regs. available and when they are the folks selling want almost what they paid for them even though they have used them and probably paid for them twice already.
I may be buying a few more traps later on this year but for now that is it. If I do buy more it will be 1/2 doz. 330 coni-bears a dozen Duke DP's ,1 doz.#2 Bridger 4coil fully modifieds, and 1 doz. 110 Bridger's and some more stretchers for coon, fox, otter and coyote and I will buy 2 sheets of 3/4 in. ply wood and make six more beaver stretchers, and I will buy some more muskrat stretchers as rats are my bread and butter harvest. This fall I will set for coyote for the first time and will also target bob cat and otter. I found a real honey hole for otter last fall but had no time to trap it. That place also had a lot of beaver mink and muskrat sign in it and the year before I saw lots of coyote sign as well. So along with my other areas I will be hitting this one for sure. I guess time will tell what it holds for me. I have never set for coyotes before so it will be a learning curve that a friend who traps them for the gov't says he will help me with.

Here we are limited to 20 beaver and 5 bob cats but the other critters have no limits on them. So I will be hitting the musk rats hard and be trying for my limit on cats, and I will get my three bear limit as well and sell the bear skins for a good profit . Be trying for fox and coyote for the first time in my trapping career. Marten and fisher are protected here so they are not in the mix either. But the otter and mink as well as coyote, fox , bob cat, beaver, coon, and the three bears, will certainly help bring in a decent pay day for me as if I can get over 2 grand as a part time trapper I consider it a successful season. If I was doing it full time I wouldn't be happy with anything less than 20 grand so that is a lot of muskrats. lol!

I use NAFA but use to sell to Manitoba Trappers Fur Sales which I believe became NAFA or part of it. I did do some business with Hudson's Bay back in the 70's but had better results and fewer fees from MTFS .
