take a 1ft by 1 ft piece of plywood and drill a hole about the size of a silver dollar in the center...now dig you a trap bed for your trap the size of bed depends on the size of the trap..now place the bait under the trap in the bed make sure when the trap goes off it clears the plywood...take the plywood and place over the trap.. note ..make sure the hole is directly over the pan of the trap.sifter dirt over the plywood ..all you should see is the hole..put lure on the edge of the plywood...when the coon trys to still the bait he hits the pan.....now the coon can't chew because of the plywood and stays focused on the plywood by chewing on it...dirty traps will work great for this set up and helps when you need to keep your clean traps for canines or start to run low on clean traps

you can use a tin can with a chain welded on it, a stake and a quarter and cathc em too..my granny used to all the time..
make the whole just big enough for it to get its open paw through but too small to get its closed paw back out and ya got him.
he'll reach in and grab the quarter or whatever you use, marshmallow ect..and he won't be able to get his hand back out and he won't let it go.
all he has to do is drop whats in his paw and he'll be free but i saw many of them growing up that wouldnt let it go.

The plywood with the hole in it works well. They used to use a small block of wood with a hole drilled in it and a couple of horse shoe nails hammered into it at a angle to catch the coons foot when it tried to pull it's foot out of the hole.
