ok...ok..lol....i use lots of salmon oil and crawfish oil .along with hardcore lure.pocket sets baited with fish.since moving to fla .i know coon can be trained to eat at one spot.example they know what days the trash is taken out .here we have a mojor coon problem.so twice a week we have to clean the yard.try this and double your catch. prebait the pocket sets a month before you set traps .the goal is to let the coon get used to the free food.once they find it and they will .they will keep coming back.check every day that way you will learn when they come threw .if bait is there on day one and day two and gone on day three you know he has a three day round trip.now think about this the longer you prebait the more coon will find the sets.the more coon you catch a long with mink.note if you don't want mink don't use fish.i have had great results using chicken eggs.

i used bluegills in pocket sets till i ran out..with a little salmon oil mixed with shellfish oil as a trail lure...
then i went to salmon and sardines with the same lure..caught my first cat on a sardine in a water set for coon....
this year ive contracted through my son and neighbor to catch a bunch of bluegills for bait for me...... ;D

frozen herring are my favorite. Dip em when they're running and freeze em til U need em. I also use Jack Mackeral with Eplers All Call. Sardines are to be eaten by me, but; .....if they will catch a Cat? ;D ;D

I do a lot of pocket sets with fish oil on my water line, but my major big coon grabber is a scent post with fox urine. That brings me a lot of big boars.
The set that is a little time consuming, but a good producer is a variation of the campfire set. I light a couple of pieces of cahrcoal and throw a slice of bacon on it, I make sure that some of it isn't burned up.
BTW, as with anything I ALWAYS gang set, sometimes I put up to 4 traps at one place, and snares on the trails approaching the set.

I mix pressed fish oil with 2 oz's of shellfish oil and put it into a sray bottle ( like you use for urine)
I also mix it with creyfish oil
I like to use this beacuse it will keep the coon at the set longer allowing for very high catch ratio
If you use bait it give the coon something to remove and leave with and thus low catch ratio

I think we could start a new thread titled "What Isn't Good Coon Bait?". Skunk musk, Pyrenees Mountain dog (live, ask my neighbor) Gunfire ;D............Seriously, I use carp or bullheads. If I don't want to catch cats anise oil on bread or cotton balls is great.

try using hickory seasoning( liquid smoke) with your fish it gives a long lasting oder at your set. coons and grays seem to like it

As far as bait...I use fish, craw fish, and marshmellows. Which ever I grab some times, other times I am pretty picky depending on location. Liguid lure/slash baits will hold them there a bit longer giving them time to find the pan. I haven't water trapped coon for a few years now, I like 'em high and dry. That is not to say I don't stay along the water.
For lure, I use two that I really like. Lennons coon all call is fantastic, and stays there even after the heavier stuff is gone. And another one is "buckshots" coon stacker. I haven't used it the past few years, but hope to find him again to buy some more. I liguid lure that flats call them in.
Prebaiting if done right, as described above, is a sure way of taking larger numbers of coon. I use fish scraps and put them where I want to catch coon. Draws them to areas they may not normaly cross.
I do also use a few different self made lures/baits, they work but not as well for me.

omm.....I salt my fish now...used to freeze it. I have really likeds having them salted ...cept I do almost all my coon trappin on dry land and the deer will find that salt.
I use some cayfish oil and fish oil mix as a trailer. In cubbies I bait or lure the rear of the set and squirt some of the oil along the path or trail leading to it. In my cages i use it the same way.....let them trail it right into the bait. I also use alot of eye appeal for coon trappin. Seems they love to investgate anything they can see that aint normal.

you mean when there in the pocket ?
after ive baited my trap?
..if so the answer is no it doesnt matter if they freeze..least it didnt seem too..i use salmon and/or shellfish oil as a lure so the scent is always up to the pocket..i never throw away a piece of bait..even after ive caught all i can out of one set..if the baits left i put it back in my bait jar to use somewhere else

Sunny was right on how to use them. (she aint a bad crapper) I use any fish from gills to large carp. The larger fish i first freeze soild, then use my band saw to cut them up into small chunks.....then salt them good. a layer of salt a layer of fish then salt then fish etc etc etc.....I store them in 5 gallon buckets out in the shed with lids on.....the salt stops any rot so there is no stink from them.
The salt does keep them from freezing when used at a set also. Although it helps to keep them thawed, frozen ones will work too.

for bait in live traps around barns I use Blackie's Blend Fur King, no cats that way.
on the waterline I use fish oil mixed with ProCoon.
on dryland any yote or fox lure will work. I have had great success with Forget's Picakitty ( Stef's bobcat lure) and XLDC in a double dirt hole set.
