ost, good question. my partner and I were talking about that tonight. Seems like anything will go through a snare; but, how high does it need to be set?? We were ponderin and decided that our best bet on a log was to put it directly under an obstruction 10" or so high. Great question, waiting to hear!!

all right if know one is going to help.9 to 10 high 10 inche loop and the best size cable is 1/16...now the 3/32 they will refuse to work it .most walk away or around it.5/64 you will catch some and still have refusals but the 1/16 they will goe right in with out a second thought.if i was going after fox, coon, coyote, beaver, cat and i only want one type of snare it would be the 5/64.you can set 10 times more snares then traps and they are a deadly combo with pig tail supports.

earl my friend ..thats why i use kill poles..no lost dogs..90% dead the other 5 % still a live but so wrapped up in the cable and stake they are still waiting for me.thats the problems with 1/16 and 5/64 cable chew outs but to fix that i just drive a 4 ft stake in an theres my kill pole .leave there for next season when i am done.

If I read the sign right, and I think I did, one lunge and he was gone.

i never had that happen but again the ferruls are small.if i was going to use 1/16 snare cables on yotes i would used a dispatch spring on the lock.very little fighting.any thing could happen .i had one pull a 24'' stake up with a neck catch using a 5 ft snare. now i use a 7 ft.

do ya'll use the heat treated nuts for the stops on your snares.

Post by cajunbill2 on Jan 7, 2007 10:26:21 GMT -5
yes.the heated nuts will work...but in wyo we have to have a break away devise .so i use the break away s hooks. i have never used the kill springs but i will this season on 1200 snares .

ok i just made an order with newt for 500ft of 1/16 1x19 black stealth cable 100 mini steel cable ends 100 micro locks 100 wammys 100 mini deer stops 100 snare swivels
all these a black except the swivels. i asked newt what was the best to use for cats and this is what he told me to use except for everything being black. i liked the idea of all the components being black that is why i went that way.
so i will tell ya'll how it goes when i get home.

i was thing about that .keep us informed on how they work.i have mixed feelings on the black...at night i feel they would be great but in the day it might cause a flag. to easy to see.but most travel at night but some do travel in the day light.

I use 1/16 snares for every thing, and haven't had much for problems, the only coyotes that I have lost were snared around the flanks. I use the dispatch springs on every thing and that is one of the best things some one has ever thought of. I have a set up that I use for snaring cats I will take a picture of it and post it on this forum, its great when the weather gets bad.

earl its when you over set snares for every thing .people tend to over do it ...like a guy i knew thats set so many coon, fox, beaver cat and coyote snares out that there was no way he could skin that much..i mean think about this you put snares out at 5.00 and keep doing it till 10 at night and you have 3000 snares out under a 72 hr check law..you catch 25 to 100 animals a day how long can a person go with out rest before they start to burn out and when that happens they get lazy.its poor judgement..

Bill, I ain't ever gonna set or try to set 3000 snares. I will check traps before work, and after work until 8:00 at night and then skin. til 10:00 or so. OST the log snare set I was describing in my first post on this thread yielded a pair of cats for us.

a kill pole a a 4 ft rebar stuck in the ground so the snared animal tangles up in it so they can't move.some people welds a support wire to a 1/2 rebar to hold the snare......theres a picture of some in basic sets look under the snare contest.

This fall is our first chance to target bobcats in Iowa. I'll put some of this advice to work and learn more I'm sure if I get a chance to go down to southern Iowa where the season is.
