Newt or whomever...Is there a good efficiency to using snares on these animals verses rigid traps, or are they better used when weight and expense are a factor? Interested in any words on this subject, Thanks.

I would rather use conis or steel for rats, hands down because of the simplicity of setting them. However some states don't allow steel, so then I guess u gotta go with the hand that is dealt ya!

On dry land sets. The snare will out perform the body grip and the foot trap-------hands down. Other than that, the snare gives you just one more tool. Sometimes it will fit the job ,better than the others.

Newt, you think snaring for these species is worth possibly making a complete switchover from conis and footholds to cable or wire?

I sure wish I could legally use them here in Iowa but we have to have a functioning deer stop on every snare, rendering them useless on mink and rats. ~ADC~

dogs, No, as I said they only out perform the other typ of traps on land. I use footholds, Bodygrips, coloney traps and snares.

alright i have a couple questions ... i use snares but don't set snares for the critters in question ... with that said i have taken a few mink in snares ...
ok my question ... when rat snaring ... after the catch are they reusable? as i wouldn't think a rat couldn't destroy one if swiveled ... although they can be tough at times and once kinked i wouldnt want to rely on it to connect
question #2 if the snare is not reusable ... each snare is valued at a minimum of a dollar ... that knocks off a buck from a four dollar rat or makes a 3 dollar rat a 2 dollar rat ... (and we all know the price of rats is going down) ... that's the only downside i can see ... a good conibear will last year after year with goodness knows how many catches ... but like i said i don't know ... can only guess ... i catch a lot of rats on dry land due to the fact i set up everything with 220's ... that is a 7x7 hole of death ... every set will take everything from rats and mink to beaver, otter, fox and coons ;D
question #3 pelt damage? with the thin skin of a rat and small diameter cable ... does it mark'em up? cut in? is this a problem?
snares kick butt for me on otter and beaver ... i'd love to consider snares for rats in a couple of areas i have ... would make it a lot easier
thanks

Most of the time the snare is kinked. So it cant be reused.
The cost of a New rat snare is about $1.00 your right. But if you remake your snares. You only have to use 2-end stops $.6 ea. 14.5 inches of cable $.10 .So you only have $.22 in a remake.Useing nuts for end stops ,it even cheeper.
I have never had any damage on rats or mink in a snare.

thanks for the info newt ... it's appreciated
the reuse of parts does dramatically cut down on the cost ... i build all of my snares anyhow ... so my start up cost would probably be under a buck a piece
how are you anchoring your rat snares?
thanks again

I use cedar saplings about 10 foot tall. The same ones I use on my Body grips.

possumskinner if you have never tried it , try colony traps on rats. I suspect you do it anyway. Colony traps work well on mink if you put them in the correct places.

question #2 if the snare is not reusable ... each snare is valued at a minimum of a dollar ... Snare cable is at least recyclable in most all cases.Use it to attach drags to traps. Its simple and honestly will last for yrs.i have some on my coon traps and rat traps that have been on for numerous yrs. after the fact of using them as a snare. If I feel like it i will switch some out as cable becomes available after future catches evn though you dont have to.you can also just save it for future trap purchases.
