I had about 50 snares set the first day and caught 6 fox and 3 or 4 coon. I run 100% snares on land

have you ever snared for mink and muskrat?

I don't have a set percentage I shoot for. To me a snare is just another tool to use just like a trap. When I feel a snare will perform the task better, I use a snare. As far as effectiveness, they are very effective if used properly. I have never snared a muskrat or a mink. When I was rat/mink trapping a 110, 120 or #1 stoploss was my traps of choice.

Hey nutoy, what are some situations where you would think a snare would be better than a foothold? I might be interested in learning the snare thing if it made sense. Here in PA though, I need to go to get certified first in the coming summer.

scansy, lets say I'm setting for coyotes. Of course I'm going to be putting in some dirt hole and flat sets and I come across a trail the yotes are using to cross a pipeline or highline and the grass is knee high. Thats a gimme snare set. I can put four snares in that trail faster than I can make one blind trail set. Now I have a chance to catch four critters in that trail instead of just one. Fence cross unders are another place I'd rather have a snare. I've had folks from up north tell me they don't see how we catch anything with snares down here without any snow to see where the critters are moving. It takes a little training of the eyes to know what to look for but once you get the hang of it snares can be a very productive tool. Hope this makes sense.

I didn't realize they were that much faster to set. I can see the advantage to that.
I'm trapping mostly reds up here and that's often in fields and/or tractor paths. They run these areas, but settling on an exact spot on a tractor path would be tough. When we get snow, you might see several sets of tracks, none in the same spot. I would need to find where they enter/leave woods. I will probably get certified this summer coming up, so that i have that extra tool at least.

i run very fw snares, should probably run more. Only have 2 set now, went 1 for 2 today. i would say only about 2% on a season long basis.

Earl, is it only 2% because you don't use many and don't have confidence in them and only use them as a last resort?
As an example, there is a spot that I know of that looks like the perfect spot for trout - but we only fish it when the usual spots aren't producing - "Hey, nothings woking here. Let's try that other spot". I think we are always fishing it at times when the other factors make it bad..... weather, moon phase, whatever.
So are you putting snares in as a last resort when you aren't catching anything in a particular spot anyway? Maybe the spot is just a bad spot?

to be perfectly honest with you, I am not that confident in them, or should I say my ability to use them. I have caught foxes, beaver, coon, bobcats in them this year. I may be too picky and look for the perfect spot too much. In the hands of a competent snareman, they are fabulous. I'm just not that good. I can get em in the steel or the conibear though ;D

I go through several hundred snares every year, they make up 85% of my line or so. I've got this nice box of "only used once" snares I'd be willing to sell at a premium price of course. ;D No wait that was the before picture! Here they are now... ~ADC~
