what do you think will happen if and when NAFA does decide to unload the otter on the market? what do you think they'll average?

I hope they sell them all. What is worse then low prices is not selling at all. If otter get low enough in price it will create intrest and they will start to sell. Once they are selling there is a chance of them coming back up. I don't think they will go back up to the high levels they were, but will be worth trapping. I think we will see them move about like they did before the big jump in price.

I believe when they "unload" all the otter it's going to be a bloodbath. I can just imagine there are buyers licking thier chops like a pack of coyotes at a fresh gut pile. My SWAG on the avg's. Pales, $30.00-$40.00 Darks, $60.00-$70.00 maybe more

There isn't anything wrong with a $40 otter. People just got spoiled. sure I would like to see em bring more; but, I would trap em for 25.

I'd rather see red foxes bring 70 and otters 15, but, that ain't gonna happen either ;D

Scansy, it wasn't a dream. i actually got 80 for a few. The one year they averaged between 60 and 70 dollars, greys brought from 50-55. this was in the late 70's. it wasn't a dream; but, I sure wish i could roll back that time period ;D

And - that 60-70 dollars you got for a red was worth more then.
Like I always say - I didn't start doing this for the money. It's funny how many people tell me it's a great way to make extra money when they learn I am trapping now. Maybe if you have the time to run a line with hundreds of traps.......

The problem i see in the sale of Otter in March is when a article is offered cheap buyers that normally would purchase rats or mink might stray away from them to buy the cheaper otter.

why wouldnt they? there is much more usable fur on an otter than a rat or even a mink. I understand that then the mink and rat market may suffer, but you cant really blame the buyer for going with the better bargain, can you?

me too. i don think that the otter market will ever be what it was. itll go back to the 40-50 dollar range it was before the spike when it levels out,IMO from studying the market. But you guys know way more than i ever will since youre buyers.

If the buyers knew they wouldn't speculate they would know. They were way over priced for a while as good cats are now. Anytime anything gets that way it will crash. I sold cats I trapped in the early 80's for over $330 avg. The next year the same type cats $110. There is a limit what anything is worth. $40 dollars for otter is still pretty good to me. I don't want to see the fur prices go back to the late 70's level. There ends up being to much competition/no land access.

Around here, the catch is down - for everything - according to my local buyer. He figures gas is too expensive right now so guys are keeping smaller lines.
