When you are three hours from help, in the mountains, and you are bit by a rattlesnake? 2 scenarios.
1. You are by yourself
2. You are with a friend
Cell phone service is an hour up the ridge,.....away from help.

Ok serious response. Remain calm and don't take off running just take your time and get help ASAP. I would go for help not worry about the cell phone call. Maybe you can get a helicopter to fly you out but I stil think your better off going the 3 hr route.
I had a very close call very much like these senarios except I din't get bit.
Me and friend went squirrel hunting one morning. It was cold enough to have a frost that morning. I had hunted my way down to the end of a dry creek and was about to turn around and head out. I was walking down a deer trail looking at all the deer tracks when a 4 ft rattler struck the end of my gun barrel. If I had had it under my left arm it probably would have bit me. It was so cold it never rattled it just coiled back up and buried it's head up under it's body. I jumped strait up in the air and hollared then blew it's head off.
I was about a mile from my friend then a 5 mile fourwheeler ride back to my house then 30 miles to a hospital. I used to not be worried one bit about snakes but after that I am not so brave anymore. The next year I ran up on another one except I saw it first before it could strike at me. That hunting club was full of them.

OK - I don't know about VA, but here in PA, most of the mountains have old logging roads on them. Many (most?) are gated off - but could be opened in an emergency. If that applies, and you have the friend - the bitten person gets to the nearest road, the friend goes for help. If you are by yourself - I think you have to go down. Going up will get the hear pumping more and will tend to spread the venom faster. Either way, while you are walking, you may want to repent for your sins.

make sure you tie a tournicut(spelling) above the bite to keep the poison from spreading throughout your body. it has to be tight. better to lose a limb than your life.

thats because those involved do not have enough blood flowing through their systems to transport the venom. thats what happens when people are drunk
