They train dogs to do that (not bait but decoy). Coyotes are protective of their territory and come to run the dog off and the hunter wacks them. I have never tried it but have read several articles about it. The dogs are not tied, but trained to go out from the hunter a certain distance and look helpless....

theres no room in that section ,what with all your posts already there sam this post isnt stupid either, they do use dogs as decoys or "bait" for coyotes depending on how you look at it. just because something isnt understood, doesnt make it stupid. ;D

I overheard a couple of guys talking this weekend and they said that kittens are the best bait for trapping and trying to shoot predators. But somehow I don't think that it's all that legal. Again I don't claim to be a trapper so I don't know. Maybe King Samuel can enlighten us. ;D

Nope,
But take your dog for a walk over your trapping ground before season, and let him show you all the scent posts. He or she may even make a new post for you. If he or she is keenly interested in a particular object or site, you can bet a wild canid will be too, or has already been there and marked it.
I've taken our boxers for walks in the woods, and tied them to a tree for a rest, for a short period of time( at a good looking location) with a bowl of water and food, ( we carry collapsable bowls in the truck, and a 20 foot leadstrap)and came back to get them 30-45 min. later, after we were done building cubbies or making bait holes, cutting brush, etc... Set it a week later in season, and caught animals. While they're tied there, they eat, drink, pee and usually crap. I think it helps a location.
It's not something we've done a lot, but I've noticed where we have done it, we've caught animals. Would we have caught animals anyway? Probably. But the added scent, pee, poo, etc...probably helped. My .02 cents worth.

I really don't think we should discuss illegal tactics on an open forum, even though we make it very clear we don't condone them, the zaxtors of the internet are very dishonest and arent above pasting and editing to make us look bad.

This is the first time I have seen this thread, and I think it needs to be clarified. Dogs are not used a bait like you think. Like mentioned earier they are trained to go and get the coyotes to chase them and they bring them back to the hunter where they are shot. Slim Peterson had a dog that woud do this as many others have had as well. I have never heard of using a dog tied up for coyotes as bait.

never have used a dog as "bait" for anything. Never would. However. In the spring of every year the coon hunters close to here lose a few dogs to yotes every year. Over the past few years they have gotten pretty dang good at knowing which hounds will most likely be chased or attacked by the yotes. ( mostly bitches and smaller hounds) By learning this they have killed several yotes. Either by shooting or having "kill" dogs at the ready for them.
One B&T hound became a yote killing machine. I seen it one night kill 3 yotes that were attacking his kennel mate. Took less then a minute for that big ole hound to kill the 3 yotes. He was sold to a guy as a yote dog, then got tired of chasing yotes and became a very good coon hound. Go figure.
I am working a chicken farm right now that has a ckicken stealing critter. They said it was a fox, I caught a few coon and it stopped for awhile. It has restarted again and I talked to the neighbors about the "grey fox" they had been seeing. After 3 evenings sitting in ambush I seen a old female yote. Couldn't get a shot. The owners then baught a herd guard dog to let roam the place. He weighs about 50 lbs now but was attacked by more then one yote a few weeks ago. The eye witness to the attck told me that pup made it rough enough that the 3 ran off. I am really surprised one young dog would or could stand off 3 yotes.
