North face is a decent bag for the money. $ 129.00 at Cabelas.

Hey sunny, make sure you get one that's appropriate for what he will use it for. The low temp rating is great if you need it. I have two - one that I use when I'm someplace where there isn't heat or poor heat where I'm staying. And another for places with reliable heat. Nothing worse than staying someplace that is reliably 65 degrees and using a bag that's rated for zero or lower. All you do is sweat, so open the bag wide open, then get cold, close it up...... back and forth all night long.

Scansy is so correct on this one. Nothing worse than a humid night in August and your sweating in a bag. I bought one for two people, partially because im fat and partially because i dont sleep still so movement is necassary for me. But I would get one that is rated at about 20 degrees or even higher. Most people dont camp below those temps. But for those of us who do I have one rated at 40 below which is nice on the overnight in the boat goose hunts when its cold and breezy

I usually buy the thinner ones and pack a quilt.

Unfortunately cost is an indicator of quality and temp rating.

so the more it costs the better the quality?

Nowdays yes.
But at one time milsurp down, canvas bags were rather inexpensive and easy to come by ($50, 1987). Great in cold weather. Good luck finding one now.
When my old one died I got Cabela's -40 mummy bag but it cost about $450. It's never been used at that low a temp but it 's worth it to -18.
Some backpacking stores used to rent bags and other stuff and may be worth a try. I'll look around for some other options.
