It looked fine when I took the pix. That's my hand in the 3rd pic. The 'rat seemed to be in good flesh, to me, but it would not grade as a Lg. A medium, probably.

I have caught a few beaver like that...but never a rat. All the beaver were in good health too. I still don't see how they could eat well...but they appeared to be fine.

An elder trapper once showed me a tooth from one of his caught beavers, in which the it grew into a complete circle. I have caught a long toothed beaver as well, but never a rat that I remember. I would clean and whiten that skull and keep it on your shelf just for the oddity of it.
Like Cat says, it appears to have three teeth on the bottom. If so, thad really be special. I would be interested in buying the skull from you if don't plan to keep it.

Sunny- It looks that way in the picture, but it has 2 upper & 2 lower.
HWD-It belongs to my former partner. He still has it, but wants to show it to his fur buyer when he sells in early March. He did say that he was open to selling it. I'll let you know sometime next month.

I spoke to my former partner earlier today, about this rat & his trip to the fur buyer. I never saw the rat after I took the pix, but he did keep the skull. I asked him what it looked like, after it was cleaned up. Both upper teeth were very long & curved back a lot. The 2 lowers were off-set and extremely long, as you can see from one of them. The one that appears to be the shorter of the 2 was just about grown into the skull. The buyer wanted it. I put up most of his coon for him, and avg. was about $10.60. That includes about 15 that he sold in the grease. Reds about $21, & greys were about $27. 'Rats about $4. and coyotes from $12-28. No coyotes were rubbed or fence burned. His mink went for around $18. I think that I will take what fur that I didn't sell already to this buyer in the very near future. Oh, the 'rat skull. The buyer offered him $50. for it. SOLD!

We had a rabbit like that when i was a kid. Severe underbite. We culled it as a medium fryer. It was healthy up until slaughter and tasted fine.

I was at that fur buyer's place on Tuesday. I did get to see the skull, and took some pix. But...it is NOT boiled clean. The pix show good detail, but some may find it kind of gross. If you look at the 1st pic, pay attention to the one on the right. That is an upper that has completed a full curl, INSIDE it's mouth. The diameter of the curl is about the size of a nickel. You can barely see the tip end of the tooth. As soon as I upload these latest, I'll put them up. BR OK. Here are the latest pictures. As I said, the skull has not been cleaned, but shows more interesting detail. Also, the longest lower incisor from the original pictures was broken off during skinning.
