right now in the mountains and was completely lost, could you survive off the land or would you be in big trouble?
all you have with you would be what you packed for a day trip into the mountains.

I could survive a while....but anyone lost in the mountains are in big trouble.
Anytime I go in for a day trip I have a kit with me. In that kit I have 6 snares amongst the other stuff. 2 fire kits, XXX anitbiotic, some parachord, a mirror, etc etc etc. my knives are in my pocket and on my belt. When I can I also have at least a .22 rifle or pistol with 100 rounds of ammo.

I've been in that situation before but a lot worse. I was stranded, lost, and shot in the leg by a .45.

Ok, here it is. Me and a buddy of mine were out fourwheeling last summer. I'd just got a brand new 1911 and had to take it with us. Well, we ended up gettin stuck in the mud. It was dark and we were way the heck out in the middle of nowhere. He stayed with the truck and like an idiot I wandered off to find help. I remembered seeing somone camping a ways back and I thought I could find them. Well, I didn't. Before I knew it, I'd been walking around in the dark for hours. I don't remember much about how I fell down or why my gun was cocked and in my hand but I do remember hearing it go off. I looked down and said, "Surely I didn't just shoot myself!" Well, I had and the blood was gushing. I took of my shirt and applied a pressure bandage to the wound. I walked around a bit further till I fell down. I couldn't get back up. My leg has started to swell and it was hurtin bad. From there I just crawled and crawled and crawled. It got daylight and I lay there for a bit. That's when I noticed another bullet hole in my leg. Well, there went the underwear. I put a pressure bandage on that wound too. I remember thinking that nobody knew where I was and I had to get myself out of there if I wanted to get out alive. I found a mudpuddle...I drank it dry! I ended up chewing on some grass just to keep my mouth moist later on after crawling some more. I did come across a mess of blackberries. I could only eat what I could reach from pulling myself up with a stick. Time went on and all I could do was crawl a few yard then I'd pass out. I just kept on going. I heard a car door slam way down at the bottom of the hill. I yelled and screamed all I could. I even fired 3 shots and two different times trying to get someone to come. Still nothing...Well, I started crawling toward where I heard the noise. It was probably a couple hours later when I finally got down the hill. It was a house! I crawled up to their window and yelled for help...next thing I know I'm laying in the yard wrapped up in a blanket with a lady beside me talking to the 911 dispatcher. Ambulance came but wouldn't come to the house to get me till the state police got there...said the couldn't cause there was a gun involved. The lady's husband put me in the back of his truck and drove me down the hill to meet them. Five days in the hospital and two surgeries later, I got to come home to my wife and kids. It's amazing what a person is capable of if they have the right motivation. My family was mine and still is to this day! If I'd have given up on that mountain and just waited for someone to find me...I wouldn't be here today.
P.S. I crawled out with the gun still in my hand. I wasn't leavin it! I still carry it to this day, just don't keep one in the chamber. lol

right now in the mountains and was completely lost, could you survive off the land or would you be in big trouble? all you have with you would be what you packed for a day trip into the mountains. Better than most. I carry gear most folks don't...and if I can still breath, I don't panic. Panic is a major mistake. Don't panic. Assess what you have to use and work with; skills and physical resources like tools and materials. Remember; shelter, fire, and potable water. Improvise, adapt and overcome...and Don't panic! I've learned to do alot of things survival oriented because I usually go it alone...and because of some ignorance generated scrapes in the past. Not just trapping around here but in wilderness areas in the past. Catchem you were lucky. Old saying: "If you can't be smart at least be tough." Trust me I know.

I guess that would have been the safe thing to do right? Live and learn...just glad I can still be here to do both.

Catchem..that is a an amazing experiance. I am glad ya survived. I carry a side arm and or rifle all I can in the woods...both familiar areas and new areas. The long guns have a round ready in the chamber...the side arms seldom if ever do. For the very reason that happened to Catchem. RS............ your right about panic. has probably killed more folks then any other thing that could kill ya. Not only at times like this, but in most any emergency. If ya panic or lose control...your defeated within minutes. Sunny I aint even gonna answer that....use your HEAD for once......sheesh

I would like to say I could survive quite a while, but who knows? A person can get in trouble a couple of miles from civilization just as quick as he can 100 miles from nowhere. Even experienced survivalists can get into situations they aren't prepared for.

I think I'd be ok for the short term, long term survival would be tough with such limited resources, probally do better than the average guy off the street.

I look at it this way; it's taken many lives to get me here and if I die or get killed, it's only fair.
Isn't it?
