How do you folks convert reg. jaw traps to o/s? Do you grind a bit off the inner face of each jaw or do you weld a stop bump so the jaws don't/won't close tight?
I'm thinking the stop bump might be the best and quickest mod as it allows one to undo the mod and have the trap back to regular jaw mode if need be.

Those stop bumps are called lugs.Make sure if you do that the levers still work properly. They might need to be replaced also.

Some states consider ther lugs or bumps as teeth and they are illegal. This came up on another forum and a guy had converted several that way then got ticketed. We are really liking the offsets for land trapping and are grinding/filing/Dremeling the jaws and making offsets out of the cheaper traps ie:Dukes and rebuilds. Ive got some more expensive or older/better traps but Im still leery of converting many of them. Ive got some old Victor 1.75 professionals that someone else done and they are awesome for yote, fox and badger.

I don't like offset traps. I've sold all the ones I had. I don't see any practical reason for them, except maybe you land trappers like them for fox or coyote. I'd never buy a soft catch trap either.
I'd never either of them on beaver. It's hard enough to hold a beaver, so I use CDR7.5s for a foot hold trap. They close real tight.
