Yep we've used them. They or the ones we had werent much good for fish over 4 lbs or so. The spring wasnt strong enough. We had several pulled all the way out and the line wrapped up. They are handy for eatin size fish(small cats, bluegill etc) and we keep several in bug out kits etc. For everyday fishing a bankpole or throw line works just as good if not better. Once you have a hook and bait on be careful, they can stick ya quick. They are illegal in some states because they're considered a setline but I dont know if any states prohibited them because they set the hook and "fight" the fish? If your in a a bad spot and have to have a fish there are better setups out there. Ive got some oversize bobbers that set the hook themselves. But for the size and cost we do keep some YoYo's around.

I've caught up to 8lb catfish on them but that is rare because if the bigger fish can get tangled they get off. YoYos are great for fishing in Jan up to March I haven't had much luck on them later in the year. They work better at night, we will run them 3 times a night.
We bait the hooks with a small shiner and set it just below the surface. We caught lots of crappie and catfish.
If I am home we go down to my camp for Newyears eve and set yoyos we will average 25-30 nice fish a night depending on the number of yoyos we have out. Sometimes you can hit right and catch 40 0r 50 a night.
