It spring time the ice is still on the lake but the creeks and rivers are flowing freely.
I am at my grandparents place and it Saturday morning. Grandpa says to go to the shed and get 2 fishing poles. Oh boy the first fishing trip with grandpa in the spring! But I have to ask how are going to fish with the ice still being on the lake. We the kind old man just says to get the poles and his tackle box.
After getting what grandpas says we pile into his white 2 door Chevy Impala and turn south on highway 65. Grandpa pulls over at the first creek and we exit the car. I am just so happy. "But grandpa this is just is just a little creek" I say. We he just gives that smurk that only he could give. I was old enough to fix up my own pole but he said he would take care of it, so I go and stand on the covert the creeks pass through.
Grandpa walks up and makes a cast. SPLASH a big northern hits right way!! Grandpa misses it and casts again. Just as the daredevil hits the water, SPLASH, another miss! He then hands me the other pole and says have fun. Me being all giddy with the thought of big northerns for dinner I cast. SPLASH!! I missed! I real in and this happens almost every cast to me and grandpa.
After about half hour or so a truck pulls up. A guy steps out and I see a badge, the game warden. This guy tells us to stop fishing and he wants to talk to my grandpa. Well grandpa being grandpa he just smiles. The warden says fishing is not open yet and we are breaking the law. I get sacred my grandpa is in trouble!! I walk over to the car as grandpa said to do and he talks with the warden. They are both smiling and laughing. Grandpa could charm the hiss from a snake! Then grandpa hands his pole to the warden, and he casts into the fast moving creek! SPLASH! Another miss! They shake hands and as the warden gets into his truck he waves and tells me to have fun.
Well I didn’t know it but grandpa had taken the hooks of the lures!! He just wanted me to have some fun fishing even if we could not catch or keep any.
Every time I go past that creek I smile and think maybe I'll... But in this day and age the warden wouldn’t be so apt to let me fish even I didn’t have a hook on the lure.
Years later when my gramps passed away, while at the funeral, I got a tap on my shoulder. It was the same Warden, he and my Grandpa had grown up as best friends.
