nice job OST.
our deer kill across the state was down more than 50% this year.
seems like the years of kill as many does as ya like(more or less) has taken a toll on the overall deer population.. that coupled with predation has really hit our deer numbers hard.

Nice deer OST......Congrats to ya both.
I wish something would get rid of most of the deer here. Although I haven't seen as many the past year or two as usual.

Cathryn, didn't ya'll have a big die off a couple years ago. We can kill 3 does and 3 bucks and we have plenty of deer.

not here.
we can kill like 14 does and 2 bucks a season. ..every licensed hunter cab....and for every legally harvested deer ya probably got 5 that arent, sad to say.

One person can kill 14 does and 2 bucks? Are you kidding or is that a misprint? No wonder you have a deer shortage!

its 9 or 24 ..im prett sure its 14 or it was...if you took one every way possible. theyve got a proposal to close doe season in 8 counites this year and widely cut back in 31 coutines because of our kill this year.
it was down, finally tally by the dnr by 30% across the board.

bad thing is thats what we can take legally and there are alot of backwoodsy guys that poach deer too but never get caught unfortunatley so theyre not figured into the deer kill cause no one ever knows about them.
i dont get it, you can take so many deer legally here in wv curing season why in the world would anyone poach one?

I don't think you have to buy a license to poach deer, for one thing. ;D So, it's cheaper to poach than buy a license.

duh...thing is though that those kills arent considered intot he equation when it comes to the deer population and neither is predation..we have alot of coyotes and bear.
several studies have shown that black bear have a huge fondness for fawns..either deer or elk...so theyre also hurting the populatin numbers..couple that with a die out last winter because it was a horrible year for our mast crop and alot of deer didnt make it through the winter ( ive seen skeletons to attest to that fact) and ya have got to have a lower harvest,
our county was down 45% on the deer kill and the state was 30% across the board.

Nice deer. Most counties here have no limit on does. 2 buck limit every year no matter what weapon is used. With our higher tag prices and phone in registration system I imagine 50% of the kills arent legal/tagged legaly. We cut our own tag purchases by over 50%. $25 a tag is kinda steep compared to what we use to pay. Few are shooting little deer now too. Argument is the little deer arent worth the cost of the $25 tag. The population is steady to falling due to the illegal kill and alot of folks letting fawns walk.

they were talking about chaingin the regs but from what ive been able to hear through the dnr..they havent. and might not approve the changes this year which means less deer for us again next year.
good thing is Jerry brother took 6 coyotes so far off a farm within 3-4 miles from jerrys place.
way less if ya go round the ridge which should cut down a littl eon fawn predation...still theres alot of bobcats to contend with.
