German scientists are finding out energy-saving light bulbs could cause cancer. They say the compact flourescent lamp bulbs should not be left on for long as they send poison into the atmosphere when switched on, according to a report in Britain's Daily Telegraph.
In particular, scientists say they should be kept away from people's heads due to an "electrical smog" of phenol, naphthalene, and styrene.
"For such carcinogenic substances it is important they are kept as far away as possible from the human environment," warned Peter Braun, who carried out research in Berlin.
Fellow researcher, Andreas Kirchner added, "They should not be used in unventilated areas and definitely not in proximity of the head."
Earlier this year, an Israeli report suggested CFL bulbs could trigger breast cancer and there are fears about the environmental damage they will cause if dumped into landfills.
Despite these worries, and the fact they can cost up to six times as much as ordinary incandescent bulbs, the CFL bulbs are in wide use worldwide.
Congress passed a measure in 2007 to phase out incandescent bulbs completely by 2014.

I'll be real surprised when they find something not linked to cancer.
I've cut cancer out of calves and sheep that didn't smoke, drink, talk on cell phones, or work in rooms lit with light bulbs of any kind.

They must have been grazing under high voltage power lines, LOL.

Must have been the electric fences. Oh, wait, there weren't any! Come to think of it, they were on a vegetarian, natural and organic food diet.
There you go, natural food causes cancer!

I don't know if haus is being serious or not. But, we had a farmer in our area who had a pasture for his cattle. A power company installed high voltage lines through his property. After a couple of years his cattle began to take ill. They had never been sick before the power lines were installed.
A trip to the vet determined some of them had developed cancerous tumors; some died.
After he lost 12 cows, he filed a lawsuit against the power company to take the towers off his land. After a couple of years and losing more cows, it was determined that the high voltage lines in his pasture did cause cancer in his cattle. The power company had to re-route the power lines off his property.
He was also reimbursed for his cattle and loss of milk production.

A friend of mine had a small truck farm on the hill behind his house. A few years after they put in an over head power line his ground hardly yeilded anything.
This wan't just a power line, this was the big steel towers and several thick lines with constant buzzing. Now the environmentalists are insisting they put those lines underground. I think that would be a case of 'out of the frying pan and into the fire.'

That's what this farmer I referred to had going through his pasture, those big steel towers with the lines buzzing all the time.
His cattle got almost like mange after a while. Their hair started falling out and they got big open sores. Later, he started finding them dead. He hasn't had any problems since the lines have been removed.
They wanted to pay him and put them underground too. He said, no way. He just wanted them off his property.

I was joking. I have sat below them before and called coyotes early in the morning. That buzz is just spooky. Come to think of it I think I used to have hair back then and now I'm bald, LOL. I have read reports about the radiation emitted by those lines. I never stayed too long. Taxidermist who I worked for raised pot belly pigs. It was near the McAlester Army ammunition plant. They blow up old munitions every week. Some are still from WWII. Anyway, the chemicals in the air or ground water causes his pigs to get a lot of cancer. Can't figure out why he hasn't moved. The base fence borders his property.

See! By his own admission, haus is proof that exposure from those heavy duty power lines will cause your hair follicles to die and your hair to fall out. ;D Seriously, I do believe long term exposure to these power lines will cause living things serious damage. They should be installed away from human habitation.

Years ago I was deer hunting at my in laws. They have one of those huge power lines going thru their property. They also have a large creek going thru. A flock of mallards was on the creek and when they took off there was a loud boom. I went over to the line and found a bunch of dead mallards. All I can figure is when they took off there was water vapor around the flock, enough to produce a ground for the power line.

Years ago, I had a similar situation. I was pheasant hunting near some of those high lines. A rooster flushed. I fired 3 shots at him without ruffling a feather. But, he flew into the wires and dropped.
I don't know if he broke his neck hitting the wires or if he was electrocuted. But, I do remember he tasted good.
