Just when you think you've heard everything, editors of the Journal of Animal Ethics, insists people should stop referring to their dogs, cats, hamsters, and other domestic animals as "pets". Instead, they should be called "companion animals" and their owners are "human carers". They argue that derogatory language about animals can affect the way they are treated. They have a horrible time with the use of the word "wildlife", when they favor the term "free-living". They feel the word "owners" goes back to a time when animals were regarded as "property, machines, or things to use without moral constraint". Their goal is to stamp out phrases such as, "sly as a fox", "drunk as a skunk", and "eat like a pig". No mention of "eager beaver", "silly goose", or "gentle as a lamb". It's probably coming.... It sounds to me like people who need to set up an appointment for an "annual screw tightening".
