Some of the dead wood may be getting thrown out by the younger crowd. Orrin Hatch may be facing a younger and more conservative opponite when he runs for re-election. Why do we have people serving for 35 years+ in the senate anyway? They helped get us where we are. They were on duty and should have seen what was coming, but instead they simply make moves to protect their job and win favor with their friends. Recently some other long term government officials have simply announced they are stepping down.
Can you imagine the United States of America with a 10 trillion dollar surplus instead of a deficit?

Another good example is Strom Thurmond. What was he nearly 100 and still in the senate? Ridiculous! Most people's brains don't even work properly at that age! They should be an age limitation put in place.

Well our Spencer 'Stabusinthebackus' didn't even bother coming to the state for re election, is under investigation for insider trading bs at the moment and still won by a large margin in the primary!
People complain and complain but come election time they just vote for the name they recognize! That's how people stay in office till they die!

I guess another bone to pick with the dead wood is having them do their job. Were they sent their to abstain from voting on a topic? No, they should be required to vote yes or no on every bill that comes before the house or senate, unless they are in a coma at the hospital. Other than that I think they are playing politics and not really doing their job. You can sell an abstain vote just as easily as a yes or no. If a bill would fail with a couple more no's, you could agree to abstain and let it pass, while being able to say you did not approve the bill. C'mon thats just crooked.
