Depends on the time of year, temperature, etc. In the spring I like a bluegill finish Rappala.
I never caught a fish with it until I watched a show on TV on spawning bass. When a bluegill came close to the nest the bass would gently grab it in his mouth and slowly swim away from the nest with it, then release it. I always thought they hit it real hard. So I changed my tactics and watched the line real close, if it barely moved or quivered I set the hook, hard. Caught a lot of fish that way.
Later in the year I like curly tail grubs and bump the bottom real slow.

I liked skipping pork frogs over the surface then discovered that rubber crawdads cranked over the surface fast caught a lot of fish

anything that floats and you can get to skip across the water drives the bass up here crazy. We have a remote lake that is a great lake to catch them in but you can only get there by canoe

A nice 8 inch worm works for bass, oh wait wrong bass ;D Fur muddy water this time of year until the june, I like a rattle trap in chartruse. or a Smithwick Devil horse on the top and use it in short jerks or twitches. spinnerbaits and buzzbaits work good for muddy water also, the key to muddy water is a bright color, ie. white, chartruse, and a lot of noise or viberations Why do ya ask cath, are you goin to try to out fish your son this spring ;D

top water, buzz baits and spinner baits .if the water is muddy the darker the bait....now buzz baits makes them mad even if they can not see it they will skrike out of anger just like a woman.

chartreuse and white or white spinner bait with Colorado blades. the muddier the water the bigger the blades. real at a slow pace.
a black/red flake tube works good to i put a rattle in between my weight and hook.
a chartreuse crank bait works good too just pick the one that runs at the depth you want to fish.
if your fishing a farm pond just get some H&H spinner baits chartreuse and white.
remember when your are trying to duplicate a bait fish in muddy water they will be lighter in color compared to bait fish in clear water.

2 fool proof lures for bass....although I have 1000's of dollars in lures....hahaha......
Water temp below 60 a mid sized spinner bait chartruse and white, with a thumpin blade. The more thump the better. If I can get either of my 2 brain cells workin I will tell ya the name of the best I have ever seen or used. Not a common name at all. The blade is unlike any other and has a thump that would make a rabbit jelous. The hook is a twin type hook. Not as snagless as most Spinner baits, but deadly on early season bass. I won lots of early tourny's with that bait. ;D ;D ;D They really shine in muddy cool water.
Over 60 water temp. A "Bayou Boogie". A rattle trap type lure that flat out catches any other of those type lures. We modifiy ours but they will catch straight out of the box.
If ya can get to where they are, a jig and pig with a rattle will do it too. but ya have hit 'em in the face with is.
