Actually they are for coons but if set in early season expect possums too.... View one is looking straight into the bucket... Use whatever bait you want I used my bait as example but a big chunk of fish and a little fox call lure drizzled in is what I use late season. View two shows it set in a typical location... See how I run the chain up and stake through it and the bucket, this keeps the trap there with the catch and stabilizes the bucket so when the coons climb on it it won't flip. View three shows a side view of the set... You can see how deep the slots are cut in the sides. I also drill a hole in the top and bottom for the stake and several in the bottom to allow the scent out of the bucket. I also try to prop the front of the bucket up 2-4" so the coons can see in easier. Good luck on your possum line. ;D JPJ

never really cared for the bucket setups....to much more to carry....but I can see where that would work on a lake or where ya can drive pretty close to your sets.........
I may try that when I am cage trappin some lakes and rivers via boat this year. Alot cheaper than building all the cages that's for sure.
One thing I have to be real careful about is dogs in some areas here. I would have to use 160's instead of the 220's for sure. Or use the five gallon buckets and DP them like I have in the past.

We can bait a 160, never caught a coon in a 120 nut I'm sure they would hold em if they got their head in there., but I'm afraid it would have to past their ears, so they wouldn't slide it off. In that case I would set the trap so the trigger has more play before it goes off!

The VTA is working with the VDGIF to cut back on restrictions for some of our sets, sounds like WV is going the wrong way.

I recently read the WV regs because i may do some trapping there and they are more strict this year than last.

I dont think the color of the bucket makes a difference I use white, green, black and yellow. I get critters in all of them. They are easy to carry and set. Stack the buckets up, put the traps in the buckets, stakes in the bucket and bait in your other hand a and away you go. Whats so hard about that. My 2$$. There nice to use when it gets cold and the ground starts to freeze and the creek edges get icy.

Definately a great coon trap, just make sure it is securely stabilized.

guess i'm a can adict, coffee cans large juice cans any can that would be about 1 or 2 quart size can be used. two holes punched thru opposite sides of the can about 2 to 3 inches up from the bottom. make the holes big enough for whatever size stake you are useing thru the can. put bait (good sized fish head or chunk of caraccas, muskrat carcass) and blend a leghold trap into the dirt in front of the can, if the trap is to be placed in shallow water just scoop a trap bed so the trap is level with the bottom. here in pa. connibears arent allowed on dry land either. the only thing is take your cans out of the woods when your done with them or its littering and some places we trappers dont need anymore said against us.

Does it matter about the color of buckets used in bucket sets? Ive seen where some swear you cnat catch them on the white buckets. Is that just BS?

i'll go along with the color of the bucket not makeing a difference. white buckets stand out more makeing them more pron to theft.

the claim about hem i read was that the blue ones are less visible to the animals and theyll go to them and wont shy away from them as bad. Do you think theres any truth to that?

No, the better the animal can see the bucket, the more it would stand out as something that needed to be checked on, especiallyif you pre-baited.
