I was having some down time at work last night and came up with a bright idea to test some of my baits on the dog.
The Question would be how does my dog (A 5 yr old Yellow Lab who does not come on the line with me but smells everything i bring home. She is not used for her nose, just her retriever abilities) Anyways, how does she respond to some of my trapping baits?
The Experiment
I used a 1/2" rebar stake and pounded it approximately 5 inches into the ground. Each hole was approximately 10 ft from the next hole.
I took a plain Q-tip and dipped it one time into the bait container and then dropped it down the hole.
This was all done out-of-sight of the dog.
I used her leash to escort her to the vacinity of the bait holes and then gave her the lead.
1st bait: Caven's MB Coon & Mink bait
Result: She walked right past it and never flinched.
2nd Bait: Caven's Hiawatha valley
Result: She sniffed it very aggressively and actually pawed the ground.
3rd Bait: Billingsley Slobber
Result: She actually caught the scent about 5 ft away and made a bee-line to it...then rolled, twice!
4th Bait: Caven's Just Mice
result: She smelled it very aggressively but never tried to paw the ground. Actually tried to turn and go back to itwhen I started to lead her away.
5th Bait: Miranda's November Red
result: She smelled it but lost interest quickly
6th bait: Caven's Minnesota Special
result: She rolled in it very quickly
I understand this was not done to scientific standards but can anything beneficial be gleaned from it?
I was surprised to see that see rolled in a couple of the baits? Obviously this would be a bad thing on the coyote or fox line. Should I avoid it simply because of what the dog did?
