I made a batch of my cat, fox, and yote bait last month. So i went out yeasterday after noon and made some dirt hole test sets. I made six dirt holes each was 8 inches deep and about 1/2 teaspoon of the new bait was set inside hole. And a grass plug was set in hole. checked first hole this morning. It was still there no activity 2nd hole had the plug removed and mice tracks every where and bait was gone. 3rd hole had been dug up and bait gone. Id say canine with all the digging to much grass for a good set of prints. 4th hole plug removed and bait gone. 5th hole was torn up pretty good. but perfect yote print in that dirt. 6th hole there was a buzzard eaten the bait when i went over hill. Well not to bad for a first trial and only a months worth of aging. I reset the holes again this evening will update tomorrow. The wheather was over cast and hot and humid. Rained a little last night.

Sounds good DH, the dirt hole set I made on Saturday has had a red and a gray on it. I didn't use anything but John Eplers all call and didn't put any grass or duff in the hole, as I usually do! I had never used the all call at a fox set before.......just maybe...lol

I found a few yrs ago that if i didnt put the grass plug in that the mice would carry out the bait. So now when i do the test holes i plug them it serves 2 purposes it makes the mice work a little harder for a free meal second it makes the critter spend more time getting the bait out and maybe leaving more sign to look at. Havnt checked them this morning but i will in about and hour. I hope this bait works out it will add to my cat set ups. Hey earl do you find the summer time a good time to test bait and lure. Sounds like the eplers works great. Its a way of doing a little trapping in the summer with the testing but no trap. But you do everything else the same. It would be great if young trappers would do this it would give them alot of info on the up coming season and be able to show them selves why animals by pass there sets and why they visit. It will improve there trapping 100 percent

I posted this on the missouri site and got a reply as to why i do it this way. There point was why dont i just sift dirt around and look for tracks which is fine to see the tracks and say that well this animal came in so it must work. Wrong!!! With a bait you want to look for a factor that most dont look for. I call it the get after factor, This means That when and animal comes to the hole set and sniffs and goes the bait isnt working. Sure it brought him to the whole but didnt put him in your trap. The next thing you have is were they will come and scratch at the grass and leave. Thats always a plus but not what you want in a bait. The thing your looking for is the get after factor i want him to get in there and goe thru the grass then the dirt and get the bait. That tells you that the bait is hot and right. He worked theu each phase and took the bait. Then if that happens you know this its smell drew him in and made him work the dirt hole to retrive the bait. That is the end result of a great bait a tore up hole. I hope this better explains what in a test iam looking for.

DH - too bad missouri is so far away ... i think we'd get along pretty good ;D
i like to test a few lures a lil later ... say late september through october ... checking them while resident goose hunting then when bow hunting
i have and will try one or two earlier if i'm running a g-hog line or working a ADC job ... but usually avoid the dang heat of mid summer if i can lol
if it doesnt storm this evening you might have inspired me to dig a few holes and try out a few ... lol
;D

You and me need to hook up some time. You think like me and thats hard to find. I wish ya luck on the testing. I know the heat is killing me. But when i see one of the setups destroyed it gets me all pumped up!

i hear ya DH good feeling of satisfaction when testing homemade lures and baits ... aint it even better when they pile up fur even though days are long and tiring ... i know what ya mean about getting pumped up ... for me at times it becomes just a routine of motions ... but i still anticipate the approach of each set ... kinda like christmas a couple hundred times a day lol ;D

I know thats right the anticipation is enough to keep ya a wake at nights to. I spent a many nights waiting to run traps in the morning. But trapping can wear ya down. But i seems you always find this one set that you no will connect and cant wait to see the results. It never gets old. Then reality kicks in when back at the shed and the real work begins. But then you think tomorrows another day and what will be there tomorrow. Ah the life of a trapper!!!!!
