Some of the problems that you run into with lure is that most of it doesnt tell you how to use it. How much to use. I have found out that over luring can be a big problem. Also when using lures around your sets care must be taken when opening the bottles over your sets.
When testing lures as i do the amount of lure is as important as location of sets. Over luring and area is just as bad as not using lure. A set can become to hot and may take 3 or more days to mellow out. This meaning that if over lured the scent is to strong and animals will tend to shy away until the scent mellows out. This can be overcome by using less in the beginning then add more later. " The old saying less is more" and "More is less " This applies here in luring sets. Those small bottles of lure were meant to do X amount of sets. And if your not getting very many sets per bottle i would say your over luring.
When applying your lure to sets always be aware that if you open the bottle over your set that the crude along the cap will fall off. This often times will fall right around and on the trap. This will cause some animals to dig your traps up and leave you presents. So when opening bottles of lure always have the bottle over the exact spot you want lured. As this will make sure that any and all lure is exactly were you want it to be.
When i use a lure for the first time. I will open the bottle at the spot where i want the lure and take a stick about a 1/4 in in diameter and the stick should be as tall as the animal you are after. Then i will tip the stick into the lure. I stick it in about 1/2 inch then take the stick and stick it into the ground. So the stick will be as tall as the animal is. This puts the lure at the animals nose level. Then put lid on lure and bag it. all the time being aware of the lure not spilling in spots you don't want the animal.
This is just some insight i have on using lure and how to use it. Other trappers have different ways of doing it any other insight would be appreciated. Tony
