Whats your favorite?? We thankfully don't have a whole lot....yet. But they are coming!! The three we caught this year were caught in 11/2 northwoods and 1 3/4. The traps had no problem holding em, but it wouldn't be my trap of choice if I was specifically setting for yotes(Huck, I know u hate em..lol). We did buy a 1/2 dozen KB 5.5's and I love their design and sturdiness. What does everyone else use and do you modify??

I use # 2 and # 3 bridgers mostly. I do have some 1.75's that I use too.
If or when we had enough fox to worry about them also being caught, and possibly released. I used the smaller traps. Now that I don't catch many reds in yote sets, i use the larger traps.
I liked the smaller traps for years, but now, I am learning to like the larger traps for yotes alot more. I want to try some different traps this year myself. Montana #3's in particular.
Have I told ya how bad I hate yotes? LMAO

Huck, have u ever seen the KB 5.5. It has a x suspension systemon the bottom of the trap that works as a shock absorber. Very neat concept, they are offset and IMHO strong enough for anything that puts it foot in it. It is dogless also. I will go take pics and post em Monday ;D

that's the theory........they have other hairpin springs underneath that dictate some of the pressure too!!

If I wasn't so cheap...I would get some of the Jake traps for yotes....but I caint see spendin that much money on traps. How much are the 5.5's goin for?
I did get some cdr's for beaver though. Great trap and they have paid for themselves many times over. I have a good market for beaver here, not much of one for these ugly yotes we have.

I like the #3's for every thing but fox, I use montys and Montanas, I do have some #4's also, there are all 4 coiled and laminated and center swiveled, with 3' of chain, and if I use a drag on them I add another 4' of chain. I have some #2 montys I have used when I had all my 3's out for cats though and have had good luck with them, they all have #3 piano wire springs on them and laminated and center swivelded also, they hol the coyotes really well. Most everyone here uses #3's.

Trax...i am wantin to try some of the #3 montana's......ya have them 4 coiled ya say? Any trouble with them? I would most likely use the piano springs instead of 4 coils. Lammed and center swiveled for sure. What ya think?
I use short chains on all my traps, less than a foot, cept those on drags, they have 7-8 feet of chain. Small drags, so fox, coon, and even skunk can move them a ways.

From what I've seen on the piano springs, I dont think you would have to four coil them if you didnt want to, as far as the Montanas I think they are one of the best #3 trap out if you like the dogless traps, and I love dogless traps. We have to deal with a lot of snow and frozen ground here so I will always 4 coil mine, but I have thought about putting some piano springs on them and leaving the other two springs on them. Another thing about a the Montanas is they come with some stout springs even the 2 coiled ones are stout, so you may get by with out any new springs for a few years.

Thanks Trax,
I wouldn't 4 coil with the music springs. Shesh that wold a elephant. LOL I am not one for alot of spring anyway. Just enough to get it through the ground, but I bed really shallow here. To much freeze/thaw to deal with most of the time.
My bridgers are four coiled, most of them, and I see way to much foot damage on greys to suit me. #2 traps mostly. I will be be goin to 2coils using music springs on them for sure this year.
Earl, another trap I really like is the vic 1.75 fox pro. If you like smaller traps they work real well. Not to hard on fox and hold yotes well. Some say they won't hold up to a yote, but I have taken several with them and had no problems other than the dogs being bent. I get that on almost all my traps though.

U don't like yotes do ya? ?...lol ;D.........So far as of now we have enough Northwoods to hold us. My Partner likes the round jawed victors with the kinkless chain and a baseplate mod, center swivel. When the yotes get thick enough, we will go to something bigger. Have #3 bridgers hanging, but didn't set any this year. There intended purpose was for dry-land blunder sets for otters, with low prices we didn't set for em. 4-coiled, baseplated, and center swiveled 6 1/2" jaw spread. Come to think of I don't know anybody who likes yotes....lol ;D

my favorite yote trap is a #2 northwood fully modified. wish i had a boat load of them.
earl if you baseplate them just about anytrap will hold yotes as long as it has strong springs. i catch them in 1.75 dukes baseplated and with #2 music wire springs and have never had a trap damaged. i'm not talking babys either 35 to 40 pounders.

The 4-coil springs made for Bridger #3's work fine on the Montana#3 traps. Less Money than other 4-coil systems too.

MTP sells a 4 coil spring for .90 a pair that works on bridgers and montanas,it's on pg 20,the milligan four coil kit. I personally like and use the #3 bridger OS with inside outside lams and baseplated for coyotes, the double lams are pretty easy on the ocasional fox as well. It's also pretty easy on feral cats, not that it matters, lol. But I did catch a farmers cat last year in one and it was purring when I came up to it,and after letting it out it was rubbing up against my leg and purring,no damage at all,and went home fine.I've added some 650's this year with I/O lams and will see how they are.

I catch a lot of coyotes in some of my cat set, so the main trap I catch coyotes in are Duke soft catch fully tricked out, base plated, center swiveled, night latched with a 10 inch chain made up of just sterling swivels. If I not worried about cats and I'm just setting for coyotes, I use #3 Bridger or #3 Victor os, inside laminated, base plated, center swiveled, night latched and again 10 chain. In areas where there are Grey fox, cat and coyote present I use the #2 Bridger set up like the #3's are. They all hold really well, I prefer the short chain, because I use a catch pole on each animal and don't shoot anything. If I were using a longer chain, I would spend too much time sewing, not the fur hides but, sewing me up from the bites and scratches...The short chain gives me a lot more control of the animal and they can't get up the speed when they are jumping to pull out of the trap.

most of mine are northwoods 1.75 great trap in my opion. we are limited to 5 an 5/8 inches on land traps. so we have a few traps that we are allowed. Trapping on state land like i do you never know what you'll catch so i like the lil smaller trap.. but with outside lams. baseplated and #2 music springs with short lenght of chain. it works well. also go with 18 inched disposable stakes keeps the thievin down if my traps are ever found.

1.5's, 1.75's all modified. If we didnt have fox I may be inclined to use a larger trap. Our yotes are pretty much worthless so the $15 fox pay the bills and the yotes are just a bonus and need removed. The smaller traps are easier on the smaller critters and non targets like the fox, coon etc. We use alot of drag type setups and rarely stake canine traps anymore. The 1.5's are a little light for badger if you have them in your area but few badgers escape the 1.75's. We are allowed 2 in the north zone and 1 in the south and most of our group filled their 3 badger quots.
