When you are night latching or making a Miles Trigger like Lynx described it is helpful if you take some White-Out, the kind you use to correct tping errors, and paint the dog and trigger white. Then you can draw in the lines you want to file with a regular pencil.
Lynx has probably done so many he can do it blind folded, but the white out is cheap insurance to keep from removing too much or not enough.

A white paint marker that is used for marking steel for welding would work as well.

Use a soapstone for welding its cheap...
