Soft shells and snappers are what is regularly eaten...they are good if fixed right.

painted turtles has a bitter taste..the only three turtles that you can eat are soft shell , snappers and gophers and the gophers are protected here.send me a address and i will ship you a few pounds over night if i can .i catch tons of soft shells in the summer and the market is a good one here.i get almost three dollars a lb but yours will not cost you.

Huck, don't think thier protected here, I harvest them for shells every year.
Painted turtles comprise up to 90% of the species in my area, to be honest I have never seen another turtle species other than a paint in our scarce waters here.
Cajun, Sounds good, but how do I know your not sending me tainted gator meat instead? ;D Well, actually I would like to try some good turtle, I'll send you a pm for details, thanks alot for the offer!

Bill, I made real good money trappin turtle in TN. was about the same price then as ya are gettin now. That was in the mid 80's. I would love to do it here, but IL. won't let us. We can take and use them ourselves, but no selling turtle meat here. And we have some huge snappers and soft shells here too. The other ya mentioned I have no idea what is.
Good to know ya COULD eat a painted turtle if ya had to. But I believe I can catch something with more meat on it about anytime.

Well, guess the Paints are sounding out of the question for tastey consumption, but I'll tell you, pretty soon, I'll have to try and catch snow turtles instead. Hope cold turtle meat tastes good.
