I like to use a trappers cap when I'm bedding my traps. A bit of polyfil under the pan and put the cap over the pan and I can tamp the dirt inside and outside the jaw nice and tight. Remove the cap and sift a little dry dirt over the pan and jaws, blend it and you are ready to go.
I have always used a tuna fish can with a dowel rod screwed to the top to use as a handle, just to keep my fingers out of the pinch area when I remove the cap.
About 15 minutes ago I went to toss something in the garbage can and an empty tomato suace can caught my eye. I scooped it out (if it's in your kitchen it ain't really dumpster diving) and rinsed it and took it out to the shed. I cut a little groove in the lip and set it on a 2 1/2, and it fits perfectly!
The advantage to this is the can is tall enough I don't need the dowel rod which required a hole in the top (or bottom). Before I used to carry an extra can or tin cup, just to splash water on my pocket sets and mock pullouts to slick it up. Now I can use the same can for both. Multi use tools are handy.

Thanks Bill.
I remember the first time I saw a trapperscap advertised in Fur Fish & Game, I thought, now there's a gimmick to trap a trapper into giving up some money. Now I wouldn't set a canine trap without one!
