The first thing i do is to make sure that the neck, legs, and tail area are all split and laid out flat. , I lay them so that the one edge is halfway lapping on the one below it(keeps the salt from just running on the ground), I alternate from the head on one end one time and put the tail on the same end next time. . after the hide is laid out, I sprinkle salt mainly around the edges, paying special attention to bullett holes and meaty areas, also the tail bone. The middle of the back will get enough salt without u applying it, as long as u can see the back with a hint of salt, it is enough. , then the salt is rubbed from the middle to the outside edges of the hide, rubbing outward so that all of the edges get salt, it doesn't take much, as the coffee can you see will do 1 hide. , this was the finished hide, ready for another to be stacked on it. A few tips.......Always cut the necks as long as you can. Leaving 3 more inches of neck can mean as much as a 2 dollar difference in the price you get for the hide. I like to skin them all the way to the ears. Try to get the neck meat off when skinning, it just takes less salt. If the legs are left long, u may trim them off. Don't worry about the lean meat around the edges, just be sure and salt it.
