What do you carry when u go out on the line? I sometimes am a mile or so in the swamps. One time i fell through the ice @ 15 degrees and went straight back to the truck, everything was frozen from the hip boots up, it could have been bad if i had't had the truck waiting!

Been there, done that, Earl. Shot a cottontail, stepped out on the ice which was over about a foot of water to rinse him off after I skinned him. The ice broke and that foot of water was about five feet deep. Oooops. I had a 3 mile hike back to camp and dry clothes. I stayed up there another 4 days and did not get truly warm the rest of the time I was there.
Sad to say, I didn't learn anything from it. I carry a survival 'can' but I leave it in the truck. That is one reason I'm going to buy one of those magnesium firestarters. I'm going to carry it in my multi tool sheath, it has an extra pocket in the flap.

Here is a piece that few people that trap around ice seldom carry but should. @ six penny nails about 4 to five inches long. put them in your easy to reach pocket. If by chance you go thru ice and cant get back on the sheet of ice you fell thru you can use the nails as ice picks to climb back on to the ice and safety. Another good idea is like hawk said those magnesium fire starters will save your life if you get wet in sub freezeing conditions and its a long way back to warm. Start a fire warm and dry close then head back better safe than sorry when dealing with freezing conditions and being wet.
