A knife...I carry a four bladed pocket knife kept sharp!!! I am about to get a new one as this one aint big enough to suit me. I usually if out in the woods also have a sheath knife.
Multible fire starters. I carry an old flint pack with me all the time. Don't take much to learn to "strike" a fire at all. That has helped me several times. Also a "bic" type lighter...easier to use if it don't get wet. ...Wooden stike anywhere matches kept in a water proof container. My poreference as long as they are dry.
A more modern conveniance......cell phone. If I am gonna be gone for several days and not able to keep it charged regularly...I keep it off until I need it. I do call "home" everyday at a certain time to let folks know I am ok. If I miss a day.....ya can bet someone will be out lookin for me.
Two others I have at hand but not on me per say......
A compass is good...if ya really know how to use one and it is a good one. Many are a joke........and will get ya lost faster than following a critter and not payin attention.
Maginfying glass is part of my nequipment when out for longer times.......many uses......your imagination is the limit for one really.
Add to as ya wish

If you only have a bic lighter and it won't light and it is a cold day, put the lighter in your armpit for a few minutes and warm it up. When that butane is cold it lies at the bottom of the lighter and doesn't flow as easily.
Also if the flint in the lighter gets slightly damp try blowing on it very softly to dry it out. And if you discover that you are away from civilization and a bic lighter is your ONLY fire source, you really should kick yourself in the butt.
