Let some one know where you are AND how long you will be gone.
When I was younger and more adventurous a friend of mine and I always wanted to be the first one's in to a lake or somplace in the spring. One year we took off on Saturday morning to go to a reservoir, we had planned on being there over night and come home the next day. We took enough groceries to last us a week and ate them before we even got to the reservoir. We got within sight of the water and got stuck BIGTIME. Spent the first 2 nights in his car, walked to a landing strip that had a shed, spent the next night in the shed, then walked to an abandoned weather station. Through the window we saw a telephone, and decided to break the window and see if the phone was connected. It was, he called home and his dad came and got us. When he got home he asked his wife why she hadn't sent help. Her answer was, I didn't know how long you were going to be gone, I thought you just decided to stay a few more days! We both had jobs and there was no way we would have been gone that long during a work week, so it was stupid on her part, but also stupid on our part for not explaining what we were doing before we left.

Thankyou, Bill.
Traveling around with that friend is why I put my little survival kit together. We were always getting stuck somewhere miles from civilization.
