I was around 17 yrs old and in pretty good shape. I was deer hunting one evening and the weather was nice not cold nor warm and right at dark you needed a jacket. I had a army field jacket that I used for hunting so I took it a long with me that evening. I had on pants and a short sleeve shirt.
About 2 hrs before dark it started raining on me and started to turn cold. I didn't think it was no big deal since I had been rained on out in the cold before. I can't remember how cold it got but I was shaking so bad I decided to go ahead a walk back to the house before it got fully dark. When I got out of the stand I was confused on which way to go but I figured it out and start walking. I had to walk about a 1/4 mile threw the woods before I would reach a bushhog trail that would lead me out of the woods. If I had been anywhere else I would have been in trouble. It was like I was lost and was confused. But when I finally reached the trail and started warming up my senses came back to me. I still had another 1/4 mile to walk back to the house and I warmed some but I was still shaking when I got home and getting in the warm bath tub was like getting pricked with needles.
I had been hunting this land all my life, I grew up there. So It surprised me that something like that could happen so close to home. I hate to think what would have happened If I had been some where else. I learned my lesson that day and I always go prepared now.

Scary story OST........but a common one too. Those are what everyone thinks happens to someone else....but they can happen to everyone at any time.
Worst for me was while I was driving a tow truck. We had had a snow storm and needless to say.....we were goin all hours of the day and night. It was 1976 or 77. Colder for that long a time as I ever recall it here.
I had been up and workin for almost three days solid. Very little sleep. I was ordered home by the boss. I lived out of town at that time. About 1 1/2 miles. I made it to within sight of the old farm house I lived in then, but got hung up in a huge snow drift. I had to walk across a field not any further than maybe 300 yards to the house. I wasn't even worried about it. Thought nuttin of it. When I got to the door my hands were so cold they wouldn't work. I could not open the door to save me. I was at a total loss as to what to do. I knew I had to get inside....but how? I fell against the door hard enough a few times out of desperation that for some reason it fell open........if it hadn't......I don't think I would be here today.
Next day I learned it was -15 with wind chills of -65. I had trapped in that weather before.....but the lack of sleep....the bitter cold....and me not really able to think clear......just about put this fella in the ground.

Ya never know just how bad and how fast the weather can change. I was deer hunting one evening and it was starting to rain. I had on a small camo wind breaker. It was in the mid 60's when i Left the truck to head for the stand and didn't feel i needed any more than that. Well the lite rain turned in to a flash flood type of rain and i was coming out of the stand and this stuff turned to a heavy wet snow. I was close to half a mile back in the woods. And this was before the four wheelers. So i was soaked to the bone and the snow was getting heavier by the minute. I was about half way back when this feeling of being sleepy hit me. I had been shaking since i left the stand and figured i would warm up walking back out. But this sleepy feeling was getting hard to ignore. About 100 ft from the truck it was all i could do to keep from falling asleep and i was feeling all warm and fuzzy. i managed to get to the truck and fired it up and turned on the heat. well right then i new i was in trouble because i started to shiver so bad it was uncontrollable. So i shucked off the wet jacket and shirt and put on my heavy coat from behind the seat. As i slowly started to warm the sleepy feeling left and i was itching all over. Then came the needles at least thats what it felt like. I bet i wasn't to far from dieing that day. And as god is my witness i will never let it get that bad again. That was a living nightmare.
