Here is my version of the dirthole set. It is a modified step-down with the pan being the lowest point in the bedding area, The first thing I look for is something obvious along a good travelway. Here I am setting on the west side(prevailing wind is from the west) of a farm road next to a gate and fence. , Next, I use a digging bar to make my dirthole, whenever i can get the truck close, this enables me to dig it deeper and quicker. , After digging the trap bed, I am ready to put the rebar stake in the ground, usually 18-20" long, I put it in the back corner, and drive it all the way down.I use a universal swivel on the trap chain and slide it on the stake. I weld a nut on the top of the rebar to keep the swivel from coming off. , here is the trap positioned, bedded solidly so there is no movement no matter where an animal may step on it. I use pan covers and 1/4" of dirt. I always use dry dirt. I usually try to offset slightly to the right with the dog position at 2-3 o'clock. I usually set the center of the pan back about 6-7 inches. , Completed set, ready for lure, and a shot of urine. , I either use a hollow weed or a cue tip for a lure holder. , looking at the finished set.

I usually put it in the back right corner, and pound it in so that the trap will not be setting on it, i use short chains, so I have to make sure wher i want the trap before i set it. But by keeping it consistent, even after repeated catches, i can tell where the dirt ole is supposed to be!
