Here are a couple of pics of a remake. After 21 catches in 38 days, it gets a little torn up. Obviously the eye appeal of the circle is a plus!! ;D, ,

I know once you catch there once, the smell of fox is good, the next one that comes along can't stand it, they have to come see what the other fox found so inviting.

My grandpa loved catch crcles for trapping coyotes. He said catching coyotes is like getting pickles out of a jar, once you get the first one the rest come easy.
I've seen him kick dirt and junk around and make his own catch circle. Fresh dirt appeals to cnines, especially if it's fresh dirt kicked over snow.

why not save the dirt from those catches to use at new sets?
i have caught greys and cats in remakes but no yotes.

because you want the set nature smell of fresh dirt.for coon sets fine..also think about this what if the lure got dug up and in the dirt.that would cause a digger fox

Bill why then do we catch so many in remake? I think what Waylon said makes a lot of sense. All I can ever smell at a fox catch is fox. After making the reset and catch another and another. So far this season I top my best with 3 grays from one set. None of them dug. Well they might have been digging away from me when I came up. ;D I may try that on the next catch Waylon.

i have never caught more then two greyfox at a set before i had to change set.red fox i have caught up to six in a set. i want the set nature . basicly if a fox is curcle shy ,or a digger fox that dirt will send out a warnig to him.now with young pups that want matter. the question that needs a answer which one will come threw first.do you want every fox that comes threw or just the pups.thats why when you hit a new location and the catch rate is high .its because of the year olds after your catch drops you still see sign of fox but but these are the two year olds and has been wised up and your catch rate drops until you change to a new location then you catch rates go up.as a long liner i have learned to keep it simple and move fast catch the pups and move on and leave the old fox for seed.
think about this and its the only way i can exsplain it. take a person that works hard labor when they first start to work the body odor is not stroung but as he goes threw the day it keeps getting strounger and by the end of the day people don't want to be near him.well how long and how hard do you think that fox worked trying to get out of that trap.if a human can see it so can the animal.
how do you know when that fox was caught that the lure was not mixed also in that dirt.you don't so now what you have is a pain the digger.

bill, I agree to a certain extent. This set has produced, for reds, for 40 days now. How many of these 19 foxes and 3 coons have come by and seen another one in the trap?? I don't know!! just had one set off the motion detector in the front yard, heading that way!! Yeah. My way of thinking is that they are jealous, and if it was good enough for his brother fox it's good enough for him.. IE, waste no time, step up in there and get U sum!! ;D

Bill that makes sense. I can see what you are talking about. How long do you stay in a spot? I am fixing to run the largest fox line I have every run in my life and I want to take the cream and move on. How long should I stay in a spot?

earl i will not disagree with you but sooner or later you will have a problem as long as it works keep doing it but remember that when you make a fox smart.hes going to have you pulling your hair out.he will dig them traps up every night till you get him or you move.if he comes threw at dusk and set that trap off how are you going to catch a fox with a closed trap.its better to just play it safe.you can still use the catch circle as a attractor but making the set a few feet from it.

bill i am no expert by no means and i have told been told by a lot of trapper that you won't catch greys in remakes. however my first year dirt trapping i caught 4 from the same set and a rock cost me a 5th. i caught a large female first then three young ones and i bet that 5th was the male. i wonder if it was a family group.
the location is idea for migrations travel though and this will be my first year to go back there so i will see how it goes. they had a good population of grey on that club.
also bobcats do like catch circles but i normally either add a fresh set or i have one there already.
i wouldn't used the catch dirt to bed the trap just sprinkle around the set. i am gonna try that just to test it out. i am sure it has been done before but i will check it our anyway. it don't hurt to experiment some. lol

michael that depends a lot on the resourse that i have .if i have a lot of land and i know you do.i do it in two ways.(one) i set my line up in hot locations that show lots of sign and work them till they become cold around (7 to 10 days) after the 3 day with no catch or very little i pull and extend my line longer.(2) if i have a lot of traps i don't pull any sets .i just reset the traps and put a small piece of plywood over the traps and extend my line.so when i start to run low on area.all i have to do is goe back pull plywood off and lure sets by then more fox has moved back in and the area is hot again.don't know what your plans are for next season but this is the way i set up my long lines.two weeks before season put out all my sets with traps and place ply wood on them .then on opening day all i have to do is lure.in stead of 50 traps out i would have 300 sets out.in wyo with the 72 hr check law.i have 400 sets out for reds and coyotes except with my snare line and then its 1500 snares and i set it up the same way.remember this just toss the plywood to the side and it will be there when you need it.same way with my coon lines.put buckets out during the summer and prebait all summer.plan to post my pictures of my catches from my long lines.when i hit it this coming up fall.

offshore...you can catch greys in resets but not like the red fox the more reds you catch the hotter that spot gets.but greys are different i do beleave that you can catch his mate mainly because they know each others scent.and you may a catch the hole family.but i do not beleave that you can catch two differnt greys from two different familys in the same sets.but many times i make a set and catch a fox and nothing after that then put a second set out and the next night have another grey and put another out and have another fox.if that was the case i should have caught them in the remake.also once i put three sets out and (llets call them abc)caught one in set a first night and b insecond night and c in third night.if that was the case why did i get them in set a all three nights .by the way i was using the same lure and bait in all three sets on this test.standard dirt hole

bill i agree 100% but when a new trapper (like i was) hear that you can't catch greys in remakes of greys well that ain't always true. i will keep the original set in place and have a fresh one close by just in case that remake caught one of the mothers, brothers, sisters, or daddys and you never know if a cat may come by also . bill i like picking your brain especially when it comes to those greys. you just don't hear trappers talk about greys like you do yotes and red fox. keep it coming sorry earl we high jacked your remake thread lol ;D

offshore thank you...i always leave the first set out and put in a new set .you are right about the family of fox but another reason is the old set in most cases pick up up the nontarget catches and leaves my new set open for the grey fox
