sixbits, this last pic... can you explain the travel route here?

|
Post by sixbits on Jul 29, 2007 17:23:02 GMT -5
most cats will travel right along the top edge or 2 to 3 ft along the bottom of the rim .not right up tight unless something forces them closer.I will look for a pic that might show a little better

note the trees or the rock that would force a cat to get closer to the rock face .in this pic I would look under the rim more than on top .more cover below than on top[im g][/img]

Here is a picture up on the side of a mountain. The reason I set this spot was the large amount of rodent droppings under neath the outcropping. There wasn't any cat sign at the location, but I knew if I were a cat that was one spot I would check out if I was ever in that drainage. If you look close the cat is in the middle of the picture. I used a long cable and hooked it to the rock that the cat is hiding behind.

The picture was too small, I'll try a different program and see if it won't be a little better.

That worked a lot better. If you look close you can see the cable running horizontally under the rock and the cat is just barely looking over it at me. The back half of it's body is between the flat rock and the other large rock in the middle of the picture.

Bill do you use drags much?

Post by bill1306 on Jul 29, 2007 19:51:59 GMT -5
Another place to look is small drainages, this one has a cattle panel across it and rocks to stop erosion. Cats like to hunt these places. Also badgers will dig around these locations. On this one a badger had dug out the right hand conner of the panel. I set a trap and only used a skunk essences lure that Rich Kaspar sells.

Normally I won't use drags for cats, for that fact I rarely ever use a drag for anything. When I catch something I want all of their scent, dropping, urine and the messed up ground to be right there at the set. Also I normally don't have time to look for animals in traps. I want the animal to be waiting for me when I show up. Sometimes we have a little photo session and then the cat gets to meet Elvis.

DH, thanks for your kind words. I think Sixbits is probably better at cat trapping than I am. Who really knows, I do know that there are a lot better trappers out there than we are. We just happened to be the two that were here last night. Me, I'm just lucky, lol.

here 98% of our land in this state is privately owned, but we still have thieves. I have started just looking at it as a cost of doing business, but it still upsets me. I just don't dwell on it. In fact I have almost forgotten about the two cats, two coons and one coyote I had stolen last year. OK maybe I'm still a little bitter.

The few cage traps I run right now I do chain and lock down. If a thief wants it, he will find a way to take it, but it will keep an honest person honest. If I see new vehicle tracks around the set and I know they don't belong to the farmer, I always pull the set.

I get up at 2 am and I'm out on the line by 2:30 am and normally get home sometime around 7:30 am depending on remakes and catches. I still have stuff stolen. My lines are only set from three days to two weeks, depending on the species I'm after. I don't run the line in the same direction two days in a row. Keeps everyone guessing and driving different directions will allow you to see thing that you normally don't see and keeps your mind a little sharper.

Good cat trapping is like a successful business, location, location, location. I use several different types of bait and the same with lures, it depends on what time of the season I'm trapping and the local food source. Late in the season I always use a gland lure and never put a set down without another one close by. (Two sets, two different baits and lures, same old urine.) By then the cats are traveling in pairs. Sometimes if the female is cute, she will have several males following her. lol
